Years back I talked to an Esso Tech on making my own syn blend for my Cummins diesel and other gassers using Esso XD3 15-40 conventional CI-4/SL and Esso XD3 0-40 CI-4/SL POA full syn. He fully agreed doing any ratio syn to conventional I wanted, this gives me full control on syn content and price on the blend.
I find many synthetic blends reflect the price of 50/50 blend but one only gets the 20% syn in these pre blended versions, I buy my syn oil for $6.00 litre and conventional for $3.00 litre, on a 50/50 blend for $4.50 per litre and I know what I am getting in value. On my 12 litre Cummins sump I could easily go 33/66, 50/50, 66/33 syn to conventional.
The Tech suggested not to mix different brands and ratings of any oil.

I also started blending my on synthetic blends back in the late 90's when i jsut finished high school. Many of my friends at the time were asking me why I did that, and said that the oils were incompatible (yet had no evidence of this) and would not work well together.
I jsut made sure to stay with the same brands and viscosity. But after hanging out here, I've realized that I can run pretty much any viscosity.
Do you also do this with cooking oil or toothpaste, etc..?
It might work, but making you own syn-blend is more than I am willing to do. I have a buddy that also does this..He doesn't care what brands either...he just mixes in 1-2Qts of full-syn brand name oil with 2 or 3 qts of whatever conventional oil is on sale.
