Who makes which battery?

Who is Enersys? Is that a 3rd big player or is it JCI/Clarios or East Penn?

Does Enersys make good highend car batteries? I'm mainly concerned with highend flooded G34.

Is Exide still in business? Do they make good car batteries?

What about Crown (USA) car batteries?

Does Full River (Chinese) make car batteries?

Does Discover (Canada) make car batteries?

Deep Cycle AGM

I own 2 identical mobility scooters that use AGM batteries. I was a battery tester of mobility batteries for a regional battery company for a few years. I drive the bjeebers out of these scooters on trips around town. Adding to the batteries' pain is my scooters have the rpm/speed limiter removed and are 63% faster than stock.

Full River DC deep cycle AGM batteries only lasted 6 weeks in my mobility scooters.

East Penn (MK, Deka, Duracell, etc) AGM (made in Vietnam) lasted 6-12 months in my scooters. It's not a deep cycle nor a starter battery. It's a medium quality mixed use battery. It's often used in mobility scooters. MK batteries were the stock batteries in my scooters. In regard to AGM batteries for mobility scooters and E-wheelchairs... East Penn sets the standard for mediocrity that all others are measured against.

Discover deep cycle AGM (Canadian) lasted 1-2 years in my scooters. Does Discover also make car batteries?

Powersonic (Chinese) PDC deep cycle AGM last 3-5 years in my scooters.

If you want a very good deep cycle AGM then I highly recommend Powersonic PDC. I also recommend Discover EV. Crown are reputedly good, but I've never tried them. Trojan has a mixed reputation.

If you want a good deep cycle gel battery, East Penn (Deka, MK, Duracell, etc) makes the best deep cycle gel batteries. My scooter doesn't use them, but the battery store's maintenance manager uses MK gel in his wheelchair. He swears that East Penn makes the best gel batteries.

Enersys makes Odyssey, arguably the best battery available. Ive never seen a better made longe lasting battery myself.

Crown makes a great lead acid battery.

East Penn, Deka, JC - B grade stuff.

It was a lazy effort. I just reposted a 5.5 year old list. It'd be a huge service if someone compiled an up to date list.

Such a list would only be good for generalities, and have limited utility. It would also vary, based on when, and where the sample was taken.

Someone sampling the racks at Walmart on the left coast would find them filled with batteries made by DN Automotive, which last year were mostly Hankook/Atlas, or the year before that, JCI.

Their counterpart on the right coast would be more likely to find EP, or JCI batteries.

Interstate? That has traditionally meant JCI, right?

In the past, perhaps, but none of these three are JCI batteries (the last is a rebadged Enersys):

But, those JCIs still exist (surrounded 5/6 by Exides, for the sharp-eyed).

Over the past few months, the second photo of the Costco Interstate Exide was more the norm.

Over the past few weeks, the last photo of the Costco Interstate JCI has returned. One warehouse had a mix of the two. The other had stock that was all JCI.

That's just one brand, but the normal practice now, for most of the brands normal people encounter at the usual retailers.

Most shoppers don't care who made what, especially if the goal is just to be able to get their dead car started again, and fast.

That's what most of the market is, and is served accordingly.

Even here, where the audience might be more choosy about what they're buying, and dig deeper, it's evident there are still those who weren't aware that a big policy change was made at Costco, more than a year ago.

The situation is very similar to the produce section at the market. That big pile of oranges might have come from Florida, California, Brazil, or another citrus-farming location. Or a mix of them that was dumped into the bulk orange pile, from the boxes of whatever the truck delivered that week.

The signage, or small labels might acknowledge who grew those oranges, and where, but most people aren't going to notice; they just wanted to buy some oranges. More important to find that they're fresh, and sweet.

WYSIWYG, and that's going to vary by time, location, and likely to be different next week, month, or year. A list isn't going to be much help if it differs, and likely will.

I don’t know for sure but when Walmart goes out to bid for battery suppliers I assume they say something like “ vendor supplies replacement batters according to existing Walmart warranty : 3 years free free replacement, 2 years prorated for total of 5 years” I don’t believe Walmart takes any of the risk. The vendor sucks up any warranty cost. Also, the vendor must know Walmart doesn’t go too far out of their way to confirm warranty claims. This keeps Everstart Maxx quality consistent no matter who the supplier is. Just my two cents.

I just bought a Walmart Everstart AGM Platinum made in South Korea. Label lists free replacement for 4 years. Any idea who made this?

Forum search will bring it up....I saw it earlier today in a thread I randomly came across that was perhaps a year old.
I bought one of these a year ago...still working fine.

Here is the quote:
"Walmart is here is all Korean, and the serial numbers all start with HSW(Hyundai Songwoo), ATL(Hankook Atlas), and there's a third one, DTR."

Another quote:
The serial number will spill the beans, AFAIK for who supplied the battery:
JCI - Clarios, fka Johnson Controls, Inc
EPM - East Penn Manufacuring
These are Korean made;
HSW - Hyundai Songwoo
ATL - Hankook Atlas
DTR - DN Automotive, fka Dong-An Tire & Rubber

I bought the same battery 11 months ago. It's serial number begins with HAN, which I believe designates Hankook as the manufacturer.

I copy the list below from an Xterra forum where it was posted in Aug 2019. I'm not sure how accurate the list still is 5.5 years later when I'm posting it in Dec 2024.

Autocraft: Johnson Controls
Sears- Diehard: Lead Acid- Johnson Controls, Platinum AGM- Odyssey, Gold Advanced AGM- Eastern- Penn.
Interstate- Johnson Controls.
Walmart Everstart- Johnson Controls (Exide Contract Cancelled).
Autozone Duralast- Lead Acid- Johnson Controls, AGM- East-Penn.
Pep Boys (including Bosch)- As of Aug 2012 Exide
Napa- Lead Acid- Johnson Controls; AGM- East-Penn.
Optima- Johnson Controls.
Varta AGM- Fall 2012- Johnson Controls in a new US plant.
Costco-Johnson Controls.
Northstar- Northstar and also distributed by Batteries Plus as the X2Power and Exide under the Northstar label.
Duracell- East Penn (Deka)
Rayovac (Batteries Plus)- Lead Acid- Johnson Controls; AGM- East Penn (Deka)
Deka- East Penn

I'll add to that list Oreilly Superstart is made by East Penn. I just bought a Superstart Extreme 34EXT group 34.

Johnson controls is now Clarios, but still same products AFAIK.

Someone else in another thread at this forum said that local Walmarts get their their Everstart batteries from the nearest manufacturer/supplier. Sometimes East Penn, sometimes Johnson/Clarios. If that's correct, then some Everstart are East Penn, and some are Johnson/Clarios depending on where your Walmart is located. Either way Everstart is reputed to be good as are East Penn and Johnson/Clarios.

I think East Penn and Johnson/Clarios both make good products. Who you buy from matters a lot too. Price, warranty, service all matter. Service matters most to me because I'm handicapped. I get best service from Interstate sellers and Oreilly Superstart sellers.

An important, but often overlooked thing is in store battery maintenance. Do they keep their instock batteries charged, or do they ignore them and let them deplete? Interstate sellers and Oreilly put their batteries on chargers regularly. Does Walmart do that? How about other sellers?

Let the games begin! OK, that was overly dramatic. Let discussion begin.
So many are sourced from different manufacturer's in different areas of the country that a list like that is not all that useful. Some manufacturers may not make every group size and there maybe different manufacturers for that reason also. And given COVID and supply chain issues, no one is single sourcing any more but rather have contracts with multiple suppliers. Lastly contracts end and new ones are written.

East Penn works for me starting a diesel Sprinter in winter.

This Odyssey weighed almost 10 lbs more than the Toyota OEM.

Not surprised the Odyssey weighs more. The TPPL design typically packs more weight and plates per Sq inch.

My newer odysseys weigh exactly what the old ones did.

Im on year 15 now with the unit in my Titan.

Battery serial number, on Walmart EverStart also begins with HANxxxxxxx so I also assume this was made by Hankook.

Have a Red Optima 34r in the Ford F-100. 800/1000 CCA/CA's.
Has been a good battery as this is a 1200-mile a year driver. The 427fe loves eating amps to wake up!
We've got O'reilly batteries in the Toyotas - FJ and 4Runner. They're solid with their warranty and they seem to last a decent time.

Anyone know who makes nissan batteries? Cause i just had one 6 moths old be completely shot last week

I just grabbed a deka gold from family farm and home, group 35 with a not so great warranty of 24 months. My 18 rogue Walmart max went from 85% to 53% since this summer and is around 40 months old. I stacked a gift card and in store coupon and paid $90. The Walmart max is Johnson controls and with temps dropping in Ohio, I figured why chance it. I tested the battery at the store and it was 100% charged and health and stickered 12/24. Good deal for sure but would like a longer warranty. Oh well. After my wife’s 6 month old battery crapped out at Detroit airport I’m skittish on battery age. This is a 3rd car that spends more time on the tender than driven.

I'm trying to find an Odyssey locally for my Legacy. One day I was able to get it shipped from Autozone and then the next day gone! I can find them for my Impreza and Audi but the Legacy is still nowhere to be found.
Advance Auto distributes them as well.

Had an Optima in my WRX as they are much lighter. Worked fine.

My NISSAN (Group 24F) labeled battery was made by Clarios (formerly Johnson Controls).
The problem with Nissan, or at least my 2018 thru our brand new one is the smart charging system. Using an agm I think is a waste of time. The alternator only reaches 14.2 sporadically. My 30 yr tech assured me that an old school flooded would live a healthier life than an agm due to this. I’m sure there’s a way to disable the system but I have no idea how. Nissan uses EFB batteries that to my understanding is geared more to stop start applications. None of my cars have that, therefore I’m just going to roll with cheap flooded batteries unless I can find a reason not to.
