Who makes quality 5w-40 oil?

Hey All,

I may run 5W-40 in the future, I noticed Walmart has Mobil 1 (the turbo diesel truck version) but not "Mobil 1 Formula™ M 5W-40". I know Rotella T6 is an option as well, but it's technically not supposed to be used in my engine.

Also I could use Pennzoil Ultra 5W-40 Euro (online order only), but are there any other 40 weight oils Walmart sells?

On a side note, I can't use 0W-40 since I'm under warranty.
I'm planning on doing a used oil analysis on both 30 & 40 weight oil to see which on stands up to my driving conditions.

What does your manual say? Be specific.
 
I've been running 5W-40 in my Jeep Liberty since it was new. currently have 130k on it. OM calls for 5w30. I figured since it was a Daimler product when built, I should use a Euro spec oil. or run the spec'd weight in the winter and use a 5W-40 in the summer
 
Same vehicle and I run Mobil 1 0w40. I don't see how Hyundai can deny warranty work since you are using a 40 weight oil.
 
My manual allows for 5w30/40, it's for a DI Turbo application. Occasional weekly spirited driving, but otherwise a mix of highway and city driving.

Not sure why you don't order pennzoil ultra 5w-40 from amazon.

There is no PCMO 5w-40 that I've seen on the shelves in a while. Occasionally I've seen valve line but it has been a while.

The question really is if there is some other spec that a PCMO 5w-40 may hold that an HDEO won't.

Keep a close eye on Amazon and order the PU Euro 5w-40 when it's on good "subscribe and save," price though if you have other subs you will have to wait a while for it to come and price could change. You can always cancel it once it ships, but they don't necessarily ship it immediately.

Still, if you plan ahead they often have it for less than $37 on subscribe and save for 6 quarts to your door. I think right now it's $39 and change.

The Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5w40 you find in stores is for modern diesels so it's going to be weaker in additives. I wouldn't choose that. The Valvoline product you will find is also for modern diesels so I wouldn't choose it either.

I think the 5w-40 Pennzoil Euro Ultra is your best bet since your under warranty.

Nevertheless, since your book allows it and many do it, there probably isn't anything wrong with using 5w30 Ultra, Platinum, or Mobil 1 either if you want those good deals in store.

Mag 1 5w40 is a good option, and it even comes in clear bottles!

It is also available alone along with the Pennzoil Ultra 5w40

However, there is nothing with using one of the may excellent, easily-available 5w30 oils like M1, Pennzoil Platinum / Pennzoil Ultra, Edge, etc.
 
My local AutoZone recently started carrying PUE 5w40. And who knows, as SOPUS rolls out more Pure Plus oils, PUE 5w40 may become as available as Mobil 1 0w40.
 
Wally's here also has the Delo 5w40, I'm sure that's good stuff too but like the Rotella does not likely meet the specs you need. Not a lot of 5w40's at Walmart. Advance has the Euro Spec Castrol 5w40 which is pretty reasonable if you catch it on an OCI special, otherwise forget it.

API SL, SM, SN? Any ILSAC, ACEA, or manufacturer specs called out?

If you're concerned about warranties and such, and your manual states API SN, something like Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck may not satisfy you since it is SM rated.

Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck and Mobil 1 0W-40 would most likely work fine, but if you want to follow the manual to the letter, then those may not work for you.

If I wanted/needed a PCMO in 5W-40, I'd look at Pennzoil Ultra, Valvoline Synpower, and Castrol Edge.

Read ALL of the letters and numbers in your owners manual, not just the viscosity numbers.
