Who is using Castrol GTX?

I use Castrol GTX 5-30 in my wife's neon with a WIX filter and OCI about 4000 miles. I just bought a Dodge Caliber R/T two weeks ago and plan to drain the factory fill at about 1300 to 1500 miles; about three more weeks. I will be using GTX 5-20 and a WIX filter. Yes I like Castrol GTX and WIX filters.

That will be my combo also. I've got a Carquest Premium filter ready to go on it, and Carquest Premium is identical to Wix in every way (except the paint on the can) I've also got an AC Delco filter I want to use up on the following interval, the Canadian AC Delco filters use the same media as the Wix/NAPA Gold/Carquest Premium/Kralinator, but with a nitrile ADBV (which is why I'll save that one for a summer interval, since the silicone ADBV is better for extreme cold) After those two filters are used up, I'll go with the Wix.

I have 5 quarts of Castrol GTX 5W30 dino oil ready to go in my 96 Toyota Avalon in 2 months. I had Castrol GTX 5W30 HM oil in it since October and it had about 3300 miles on it so far with the GTX HM oil.

Maybe just a badluck but I used GTX 5w30 in my new Montana 2002 for 2 oil changed following the OLM and I noticed some varnish build up on my dipstick , furthermore I saw on both occasions some black deposit at the bottom of the jug.

After that I started to use either canadian tire oil or pennzoil. I cleaned the stick and the varnish never showed up again.

What the? What are you talking about? Not calling you a liar, but I've NEVER heard anyone ever say this about Castrol. Anyone else ever notice this issue with Castrol GTX and varnish and/or black deposits in the bottom of the jug?

Well I really hope this was a fluke, because it's a good chance I'll be going with GTX in my new Yaris.

I almost think I should start "pre-warming" up her car for her sometimes, by taking it on a short drive before she drives it!

I've done that! Really.

Take care, Bill

I just came back from a 20 min drive in my car to pre-warm it up, since my wife is taking it to work this morning!

Even though it's already 50 degrees here, her trip to work is only going to be about 10min this morning so my oil would not even be at 150F by that point.

While she is at work with my car, I'm going to be heading out to Canadian Tire to pick up a jug of GTX 5w20, and hopefully the rain will clear up so I can change her oil this morning. Even though there will only be 3k on the 5w30 Syntec that is in her car now, and it's the first (and only) run with that oil, I'll still take a sample and get a UOA done. What can I say, I'm a UOA addict.

I'll only run the first run of GTX for 3k though, as I want to see a UOA sooner, plus then I want to make a 5k run following that one, and it'll be from about May to October.

Guys like i've said maybe just a coincidence ??? Rest assure that I am not coming here to promote or badmouth a brand. Regarding the black powdery deposit, that situation has been discussed here on a few occasion.I'll try to find the message.

Guys I cant find with the search engine the discussion about that black powder found at the bottom of GTX. Some were saying at that time that moly had settled and pouah who care now ....sorry for disturbing your topic !!;-)

Back in the 1980's when I was using a synthetic 5w30 the mechanics used to correct me and told me that 5w30 was too thin and that I should use a performance oil like Castrol GTX super multigrade 20w50. There is no doubt that 20w50 povides and engine with good protection at hot operating temperatures but provides little wear protection during cold startups. When Castrol introduced its Syntech 5w50 oil in the 1990's heavyweight oil users could have the best of both worlds. The high temperature protection of a 20w50 and the cold start protection of a 5w30.

Now I can't stop worrying about the black powder

Don’t feel to bad, I’ve seen black stuff in almost every other GTX bottle. As for the moly, well there almost none…

I noticed nothing unusual in the jug of GTX 5w20 I poured into the Honda yesterday. One thing I did notice was that this oil was much lighter in color than other oils. It has a very light yellowish/orange tinge to it. No black powder.

I won't be using it as long as Chevron Supreme, Tropartic or Motorcraft are available.

Nor will I buy HM GTX as long as HD fleet oils are available.

No surprise there the formula certainly changed , the messages included in the link are somewhat dated. But thanks #@$%! I saved my a...s with that link.;-)

The GTX that we get here in SA has a bad reputation...Im sure it's different to the stuff you get there in the US.
Ours is SG spec and 20w-50 and has been the source of many engineering shops revenue for years now. I remember seeing the sludge and buildup (from GTX as stated in the service books) in many motors while I was a mack.
At the time BP made Visco 2000 and that was a better oil, we saw very little buildup or sludge in our regular customers motors using this oil.
When Castrol brought out GTX2 (Turbo Tested) for the Nissan Exa Turbo, that worked a lot better and the sludge was no longer an issue.
Anyway, Im not a fan of the GTX we have here in SA.
