Who here double times their oil filter?

This is a big filter for the FJ, so I am wondering if I can use it across two oil changes, that are 5k miles, filter lasting 10k miles.

What's everyone's thoughts?

My reasoning is... just don't want to throw away a filter that is half used.

Also, for those of you that double time your oil filter, do you spin it off, drain it and spin it back on?

Nevermind. Your pic wasn't showing for me initially, and I assumed you were talking about a Yamaha FJ, not a Toyota FJ which I see now.

That filter looks large. If your engine is pretty clean it will probably do a 10K run. I wouldn't remove the filter to drain it. Any extra left over oil with only 5K miles on it won't matter.

This particular oil filter has a stand pipe and holds at least 2/3rds the volume of the filter... about 1/2 a quart.

Most filters without a stand pipe will also hold most of the oil in the filter. On my Tacoma (same filter orientation as your FJ) I need to punch a hole in the dome of my filter before doing an oil change or the filter pukes all over the place. I wouldn't disturb the base gasket if it was mine, but it's not, so do whatever you think is best.

I ran the filters on my diesel for 50k km, did oil changes every 10-15k km. Even after 50k km they showed no sign of being used long. But the result you get is depending on many factors, including the engine you try it on, the oil you run and the type of duty the engine sees. I didn't disturb the filter once fitted.

I change oil in my Civic and run the filter almost a year. I will do about 3 oil extractions and refills with my MityVac and only change the filter in about a year. I only accumulate about 10,000 miles per year. The engine holds less than 4 quarts and it's very inexpensive when I use Kirkland 0W-20 at about $16.00 or less per 5 quart jug.

The hole lets air in, sure. But doesn't the ADBV prevent the filter from draining?
Draining which way? Back to the pump YES, out to the mains galleries NO. Thick oil will not tend to leave tight plain bearings any time soon. Maybe out of TC piddlers and underside squirters first if HOT.

I'm on the second year of the oil filter on the Mercedes. It's a cartridge filter, on top of the engine and drains completly when removed. Therefore I can inspect the media very easily. Since I couldn't see anything on the media, I decided to let it go another year.

It allows the oil that's trapped between the media and can to flow through the center tube and drain out the center base plate hole. It works, I've done it for years on engines with the filter mounted vertical and base down. It needs to be done when the engine is hot, right after shutdown before doing an OCI.

I would change the filter. Filters are cheap and keeping engines clean and lubricated with clean oil keeps engines alive and is cheaper than replacing engine parts due to dirty oil. Plus the longer an oil filter stays in service the higher the chance of media tears and bypassing

What about an oversized premium filter (like an m1) for two 5-7.5k oci’s

I use a Fram XG 10060 or a Canadian Tire version of a Champ XL, and go 10,000 miles total for the filter and change the oil in the pan at 5,000 miles. That’s nothing since the filter is rated for 25,000 miles and my OLM goes at 10,000 miles. I leave filter in place without disturbing it and the oil in the filter and gallery still doesn’t exceed a standard OCI. The one quart of black oil in the filter and gallery isn’t even enough to discolour the 5 quarts of oil in the pan when I put in the honey coloured oil. I have 270,000 miles on the 6.0 Chevy engine and it doesn’t burn any oil. Good enough for me. 😀
