Who actually keeps their vehicle forever?

some like to talk to the talk, but not many walk the walk. I keep rides until they are totalled or engine blows. one time, I sold a 15 yr old mitsubishi mirage b/c it became the 3rd vehicle. other than that, I keep them until the wheels fall off or smashed in.

My 2004 Ponitac Vibe I just purchased was almost exactly 1/3 the price of the factory sticker still in the glove box.

It was a one-owner trade and well maintained. It had little issues like any used car, but for $13000 off the sticker price, I can fix a few issues.

I honestly think I might keep my 88 F-150 till the day I die.. 220,000 on the I-6 and 5 speed. Doesn't use any oil, and honestly doesn't give me any problems, but when it does its easy to work on. I'm sure I'll get a nicer truck sometime, but this one is staying with me.

The cars I drive exclusively I keep until they start leaving me stranded, or until they use more oil than gas. The family vehicle, which is the one driven mostly by my wife, is the nicer of the two and that one will be replaced when the Mrs. gets sick of it. So far she's still not sick of the '03 MPV (which we bought new), and my '99 Corolla is still not burning more oil than gas ;0)

defining "forever" as becoming unreliable or unfixable, then I'm in the "yes" column.

The only exception was my '79 Impala which I got rid of because I had the itch for a new car, never having owned a brand-new one at that point. Even then, it was 13 years old when I sold it.

97 and older Corollas are better than 98-02 Corollas in that respect.

How so? My '99 still only uses 1 qt between oil changes (which I do every 6K miles), which isn't bad at all for an engine that's got 223K on it.

Engine design issue if I remember correctly...
Stuck piston rings reportedly cause excessive oil consumption.

Hopefully, if my career works out, I hope to never be in a position where I am forced to own a vehicle forever due to my personal finances. As an auto enthusiast, my personal goal is to own as many vehicles as possible during my lifetime.
