What about one of those Craftsman rubber strap wrenches? That could be threaded around & put back in handle for a filter you couldn't fit a closed loop over.

My personal experience is to never, ever, use the screw driver method. More than half the time you just tear the sheet metal, you are then going nowhere until you rip it down to the base and use a cold chisel to turn the base. It would be better to go to the cold chisel on the bottom flange right away IMHO. Just my experience. I have always been able to get the tough ones by warming up the engine/oil, but once the filter is punctured that option is out. Regards

You guys are aware Visegrip makes a locking pliers (typical visegrip mechanism) with a LARGE mouth?

Metro - dunno if this one will help but I have ALL the wrenchs mentioned and posted so far (and they all have their good uses), but if I need to bail my hind end out when I encounter a car with an overtightened filter this IS the one I get out of the bottom of the box....

My problem isn't w/ over-tightened filters, but in fact its clearance issues. The vice grip method would be a good idea on my 4.6 and 5.4 Ford V8s but not on this 302 V8 with the aftermarket anti-sway bars.

I was going to suggest the Lisle wrench but I didn't know what they were called!!
I had never seen/used one before until I was checking the clearance table at the local PepBoys. I found the wrench there but it had no packaging. I offered $5 for it and the manager agreed.
This wrench is VERY well made and clamps (cams) tighter on the filter as you turn the ratchet on it to remove it; great design. It's never failed on me.

It looks great, but the link says it only goes up to 3 1/8. The PF 1177(ST 3950) for my Jap truck is 3 3/4'' Back to the Channelocks. The strap style looks like more bother than it is worth where you have a very short swing.quote:
