Which VW 502 approved oil

I'm trying to decide on which approved oil to use for my 2003 Passat 1.8 Turbo> In the US it appears options are Mobil 1, Castro Syntec, Valvoline Synpower or order something like pentosin or motul. Which is probably the best for recommended
5000 mi/6 mos. changes? Any other suggestions?
 
5/40 Mobil 1 or Syntec 0/30 would also work well that is consinderd a heavy 30 wt and alot of VW guys on here use it and is a german oil. Ordering oil is a pain in the a ss and motul is way more than is needed on the street IMO. I would pick the best over the counter 5w40 synthetic to keep things with in reach.
Not a fan of valvoline at all
 
I suppose one could go with Lubro-Moly 5W-40 full synthetic. VW 502 rated and also look to be a group IV oil.

I'm just about ready to order some for my '06 VW GTI 2.0T to use after dropping the Mobil 1 0W-40 at 5K miles.

Since yours is a turbo, I would definitely use Castrol Syntec "European Formula" 0W-30. It is a true group IV synthetic and will take the heat of the turbo with no problems. It is available at most AutoZone stores and you should have one near you. If they don't have it, I would use Mobil 1 in 0W-40. It also can take the heat of the turbo. Both are VW approved for turbo service.
 
I just bought a case of 76 Pure Synthetic 5W-40. It's on the VW 502 approved list.

I'm pretty sure there's no such thing as Mobil 1 5W-40. Correct me if I'm wrong, but there is only Mobil Delvac 5W-40, which is meant to be a deisel oil that works in gas engines too, but is hard as h3ll to find.

I would have to recommend this oil too. I use it in my Bimmer, and know alot of other Bimmer drivers that use it too. I buy it from a local VW shop, and the owner says all his VW customers love this stuff.
 
I use GC 0w30 in my 2004 Passat 1.8T, running pretty happy right now. I used to use Mobil 1 0W-40 prior to that. Honestly, those are about the only two "over the counter" ones I like.

I say: look for GC 0w30 and if you can't find it go with Mobil 1 0W-40.
 
I've also used both Mobil 1 0w-40 and GC 0w30 in my 1.8T. Both were good oils and the used oil analysis were comparable, except that Mobil 1 had a tendency to thin out into a 30 grade whereas GC was pretty steady. I thought that the engine was slightly smoother with the GC as well, but that may have been just a placebo effect, not sure.

There certainly is:) I run Mobil 1 (Truck+SUV) 5W-40 in our 2000 Passat 1.8T. As I understand from the excellent info provided for reading here by the membership, the current Mobil 1 5W-40 is the same formulation as the HDEO Delvac 1.
Combined with a Mobil 1 filter it has been working very well in our 1.8T utilizing 5-6K OCI, based primarily on the issues involving sludging on these particular motors.

In our 1998.5 Dodge dually with 24 valve CTD, I'm running the Group III Shell Rotella 5W-40 synthetic with either a PureONE or Mobil 1 filter in combination with a Frantz bypass filtration system which to this point at 3000 miles is pretty impressive, as the Shell oil still is a very light honey color as opposed to the former 15w40 oil that used to become pitch black in less than 1000 miles without BF.Will be doing sample analysis at 5000 miles for recommendations on extending the OCI.

Can't say enough about bypass filtration and am considering another unit for the Volkswagen to help extend OCI's of course with sample analysis. Interesting info here though on running 0W-30, food for thought on my part.

No, there is the "Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40" synthetic oil, but it is tough to locate. I've only seen it at one regional chain here in MN (Mills Fleet Farm).
