Hey guys,

I've been looking into using the compatible Shell Rotella T that can be used for Diesel and Gas engines for my 2003 Hyundai Elantra Beta II 2.0L I-4. I was wondering which brand of Shell Rotella should I use? I would like to run 10W-30 as long as it safe for gasoline engines.

No my car does not burn any oil at all. Which color jug should I buy? Im confused because there are several different formaulations and most are for Diesel only engines.

The cheaper one used to be white, followed by grey then dark blue for the synthetic. I have not bought rotella in a while, right when they started the "T thing," about a year.

As GeneK says the easist to find Rotella in 10W-30 configuration is the Rotella T5 10W-30 syn blend (gray bottle). Here it is available at Walmart for 16.00 a gallon. It is rated CJ-4 and SM.

Their are three I know of.

Rotella T - Triple Protection

Rotella T3 - Enhanced TBN and Soot Control (Minimum quantity 5 gallon pail)

Rotella T5 - Synthetic Blend

OP, I have the 2.OL I4 in my 08 Spectra V dog carrying, out doors activity car and just installed Rotella T3 10w30. Car loves it, even over PP 5w20. Id suggest the T5 10w30 and think I will go to that in this one after my T3 is gone.

Anyone know the HT/HS?

12.1 according to the data sheet for CH4. However a VOA showed 11.5 for regular T and 11.55 for T5. T5 supposedly uses the same add pack with the addition of some PAO Basestock (That was what I was told dont shoot the messenger if it turns out to be GIII).

It also makes the alphabet soup Euro-spec's a bit more sensible. You don't have to do a sphincter check on each and every oil.

I'm slow, but I get there sooner or later.

Funny, it's odd that Euro 5w-40 are 3.5cP and HD 5w-40s are 4.1cP (if my numbers are correct).

I've inquired if additives can increase HT/HS but never got an answer. Is it just base stock???

There's some complex thingie involved with the process at that temp. The stratus types use words like plasticizing and rheology (is that right?). Way too divorced from "imagine this" for me. With managing that understanding as a target, I'd learn the rest of everything else in trial and error before the light bulb went off. You need to be acclimated to the environment before you can function within it. aka:speak the language. They're talking to peers.

Which Euro 5w-40 oils have HT/HS of 3.5? I'd expect it to be a little higher than that.
