Hello,
Is the Rotella 10w30 FA-4 suitable for use in an older gasoline engine? Specifically, a 2003 Nissan pathfinder with the VQ3.5? I normally use 15w40 however it has been cold lately and thought it would be better for morning startups.

There's 10w-40 as well if you can find it. I'd certainly use 10w-30 CK-4 before I would 10w-30 FA-4.
  • API FA-4 specifies an HTHS viscosity between 2.9 and 3.2 cP
  • API CK-4 specifies an HTHS equal to or greater than 3.5 cP

There's a huge range of performance between "engine not failing immediately" and "surgically clean and near zero wear."

How cold is cold for you? I've been using 15w-40 all winter and even in vehicles parked outside here in Indiana. Starts fine down to 15F.

Rotella FA-4 is near the bottom of any oil I'd consider buying. If you already have it, use it up and don't buy more. Then go to something more appropriate. It doesn't meet any API spec and it only meets a handful of OEM specs that are FA-4 and fuel economy related.

This is the oil people run in leased vehicles where they are going for maximum fleet average and they don't care about the condition of the engine after three years.

FA-4 is a low-HTHS oil class. That's the opposite of what you want for wear protection.

Better oils:
- Delvac 1300 Super (API SP)
- Delo 400 XLE (API SN)
- Delo 400 XSP
- Valvoline Heavy Duty Full Synthetic (15w-40) API SN
- Valvoline Premium Blue Full Synthetic 5w-40

I had this oil around, and I figured that I would put it to use. I normally use 15w40, temps have been in 30 40, 50s and I was getting some startup noise. so, I figured that I use it the meantime for a short OCI.
