What would be a good oil for the first start after coming back from the machine shop. It's a 4 cylinder gas engine. I did not get much info on oil choice from the shop. Still has original cam and lifters. Of course it has new rings. I'm planning on 10w30 or 15w40 HDEO for it's normal fill. Would that be good for "break in"? I also have some 10w30 and 30w pcmo of either of those would be better for the first start. Thanks for any opinions.

5w-30 for gasoline or 10w-30 diesel then any other grade once you feel it's broke in.

JAMSI, on Youtube, did a rebuild of an Allis Chalmers engine. It was a couple of videos, I'll link one below. It might be worth checking out their videos for recommendations too.

Any light oil.

Just don't lug to the point it spark knocks or high rpm. With that make sure to use high quality fuel. It'll be brutal on those rings encouraging piston slap or having the ring gap change violently with piston stroke. Don't be bashful on oil filter upkeep.

My granddad always did the oil filter break in like the gestation of pigs backwards. 3 days, 3 weeks, 3 months, then as normal.

His **** never broke either.
