Are you trying to inspire controversy.

With SL/GF-3 in the stores and SM/GF-4 coming in now, that's a tough question.

We are in an era of change right now.

Let me take a shot and get flammed, however. On synthetics, I like M1 and GC, because they stay in grade and have good TBN retention and wear is good. This has much to do with the add pak overall.

In dino, Chevron/Texaco, GTX, and Pennzoil have traditionally been good. Conoco/Ford Motorcraft is good. They also have good base oil.

Personally, I don't like to see a lot of Group I used even with a good add pak, nor, do I like to see weak add paks period.

For conventionals I have never been impressed with original Mobil Drive Clean, Quaker State, or Valvoline.

HDEOs have the best package in my opinion. Some are not very friction modified though.

As important as additive packages are, they aren't something a consumer can "shop" for. They are all proprietary, and no oil company will concede that their additive package is 2nd best to anyone else's.

Jay,

We have a collection of HDEO VOAs around here. I can tell you that I would love to run Schaeffer's 15w40 HD oil. Calcium, moly, Zinc and Phosporous are very abundant in this oil. The stuff you can't see with a VOA (propietary) are ester and other additives that many labs don't test for, such as antimony.

And penetro.

When I went to the Amsoil 30th convention, they had a speaker from lubrizol. The guy said when they come out with a new and improved additive package, Amsoil is usually one of the first they present it to, and chances are they are the first to use these newer additive packs.

I would guess then that Amsoil uses some of the highest grade additives available(according to lubrizol)

IMO Redline have the best additive package on paper, but it doesnt translate to the best UOAs in all cars...

The "snotty" surfactant that spreads the oil and additives out.
It's the main ingredient in Schaeffer's Penetro 90 spray lube.Awesome stuff!
