Which oil would you choose from these three?

Hi guys, I'm getting prepared for my first oil change of my Hyundai 2.0L i30/GT Elantra. It's a GDI engine and the manual states ILSAC GF-4 (API SM) or above, ACEA A5. (I realise that the A5 is for the European market only so I can disregard this for New Zealand)

Looking at the "Temperature Range for SAE Viscosity Numbers" Table in the user manual for my engine type, it has no option for an 0WXX. It only mentions 5WXX and higher, i.e. 10W, 15W, and 20W. The recommendation for best fuel economy is the standard 5W30.

Is there anything harm with me using a more robust oil like an 0w40 (I don't care about an increase in fuel burn, I just want best wear protection)? I've noticed that this grade tends to have the A40 and 229.5 which seems good for wear protection and low ash for the GDI. Would this grade meet warranty requirements?

I have three good oils available locally. All 0W40.

Mobil 1 0W40 full synthetic
Castrol EDGE Titanium full synthetic
Shell Ultra Helix full synthetic

What would you choose and why? Does anyone know the noack of each of these?

Sorry if this is a novice query and in actual fact doesn't really matter in the scheme of things.

Cheers James.

I'd choose the Shell Ultra Helix just because everybody else is gonna choose Mobil 1.

How long do you plan on running the oil for? Those are all great oils. If you're only considering those 3, I'd just get the least expensive. A quality 5w30 syn would serve well also though.

Doesn't matter, all three are excellent. Get the lowest price and sleep well.

We don't have Shell Helix Ultra here, I have both Mobil 1 and Castrol EDGE 0W40 in my stash.

Haha it does seem very popular here.

I'm looking at 10000K OCIs which is a bit shorter than the recommended 15000K. How does the nock's compared between these oils? Should I be looking at the lowest value?

Shell Helix sounds like Pennzoil Ultra Platinum. If it has A1 A5 HTO 6 Spec pick that one. Im running Quaker State Ultimate Durability 5w30 and its got all that minus pureplus oil base.

if money is not the problem you can go with the cheapest one, even all 3 is good, i still believe one of them is the best of all 3.
if you ask me i will choose M1, but the oil factory u are using now is shell helix, you can use it again with the same brand.
also calculate for the availability of these oils. so you can continue use the chosen oil.

Thanks guys, all are about the same price (NZ is corrupt with price fixing) so it will come down to the small details. All three will be excellent.

Marco620, ill check those specs out. What is HTO 6 spec?

Technically, don't disregard A5. Its a peformance spec that goes beyond SN,GF-5, so pay attention to it. Who cares where its from? Just test specs to meet/exceed.

Using a high HTHS oil (ACEA A3 is what the oils you listed are, they are not A5 oils) like the ones you listed are really not a problem to use and will protect better. All good oils there. Your warranty will be voided though if you have engine problems and they trace it back to that wrong oil.

That was Honda's turbo engine spec for extra high temperatures, created back in 2006, meaning less deposits at high temperatures from some (most!) full synthetic oils. If you're already going for the 0w-40 oils you listed, you don't have to worry about having an HTO-06 spec on those. That is for if you went for the warranty-acceptable A5 oils like Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30.

They are all good, but I would go for Castrol Edge (because gold is beautiful down south), and I like castrol.

Don't forget valvoline synpower they also make a 0w40 A3/B4

Also, they have SynPower FE 5w30 which is ACEA A5/B5 and Ford M2C-913D which I believe is made for the modern Ford EcoBoost engine which I think is a similar turbo GDI engine to yours.

I believe your engine calls for A5

I'd be happy with any mentioned that were on sale.

In NZ, they have the proper Shell product for your application, it is called
Shell Helix Ultra Professional AF 5w30

It has A5 certification as you need, so why you want to change the grade and sacrifice fuel economy and POWER !

If you just want the absolute best wear protection use Redline, the film strength and the HTHS values are far superior to anything else of the same viscosity.

I'll have to check to see if our Helix is A5 but I'm sure it's not. I just get the feeling that fuel economy compromises protection. Of course fuel economy and POWER go hand in hand.

This car has more than enough grunt for me (feeble 174hp) so an 1/8 of a hp won't be missed for peace of mind that the engine is fully protected. I'm also thinking a W40 could quiet the HP fuel pump and valve gear a bit.
