Which Oil would be best suited?

High mate Castrol 0W-40 is Group 4 and is A3/B4. It is a very good oil. Yes you could use that oil and it would be a top shelf choice.

Member Jayg has experience with this style of engine and likes a 40 weight oil. He used Mobil 1 10W40 HM, which you can't get here. But, Edge 0W40 has similar properties and should serve you well. I would be happy with any of the 40 weights listed above. I too like Edge 0W40, and it would be one of my first picks.

As for filter, the best and longest lasting filter in Australia right now is the new Ryco SynTec filters They are a full synthetic media filter and are designed to last a 15,000 KM oil change. A Toyota OEM factory filter should be good for 10,000KM as a second option.

Castrol Edge 0W40 full synthetic (PAO) and a Ryco SynTec synthetic media filter. Now that is a NICE combination.

Thanks mate, good advice based on your experience with these engines. Nicely answers the OP's question of 30 or 40 grade oil. Sounds like 40 worked well for you.

Boy I wish we got Mobil 1 High Mileage oils here, I would be all over them, they are great performance car oils. Still Penrite gives me some good stuff to play with.

OP, right now at Repco (to 23 Oct) you can get

- Valvoline SynPower 5W40 at 25% Off, it's $52 for 5L (regular price is $70)
- Shell Helix Ultra 5W40 at 20% Off, it's $57 for 5L (regular price is $72)

Both are name brand full synthetics, Euro A3/B4, full SAPS, both carry some good Euro OEM specs like BMW LL-01. The SHU is Porsche A40 rated.

For comparison, Castrol Edge 0W40 is $85 for 5L right now.

Choice is yours.

If you can get Castrol Edge 0w40 for a decent price then go for that. OEM Toyota Denso filters are great and I wouldn't change a thing there.

The Toyota 2000GT is a fantastic rare car, I still think the first generation Z car is prettier (biased) but money-wise and for rarity it's truly the first Japanese exotic.

Toyota's straight sixes are extremely well balanced and overbuilt. Whether gear driven, pushrod carbureted 2F old school tech like my Land Cruiser or a big single 2JZ Supra, they prove to take virtually anything you can throw at them.

Hey, I was curious about something...

I called Castrol today but unfortunately the person who picked up technical line does not know anything about technical and neither is the product on the website that i was referring to.

Castrol have a line of oils called "Professionals" which can not be bought in shops, only through dealers/licensed mechanics can get that stuff as well as some other products.

Does anyone know how/what the professionals line is like compare to the Edge?

Got a friend who has a service centre, he can get me professionals no problem, hence I wondered.

Hi, I don't know much about the Castrol Professional oil line, but have a look at this Valvoline Australia catalogue
Valvoline_Australia_Oil_PDF

It appears that most of the Professional products from Valvoline are very similar to their regular products, just as a bulk package. You do occasionally find something a little different and interesting, like Magnatec 5W-40 SP, but remember it's for the bulk dealer market. It's good stuff, but their best stuff is Castrol Edge or Valvoline SynPower, which is a lower volume seller.

Hey and thanks for that.

I went to Autobarn today and saw royal purple.

$200 for a 5L vs $85 for castrol?

Are they serious?

From everything I been able to read over the internet (many forums and experiences) the general consensus seems to be Castrol > RP and yet they want $200?! That makes NO sense whatsoever.

Wow!

Anyway,

I am down to 2 oils which I feel most comfortable about.

Castrol Edge 0W 40 A3/B4 Group 4

and

Mobil 1, full synthetic (forgot the particular) was gold 5L bottle 0w 40 as well, at $99. I had this stuff in my previous car, that is what mechanic used to use on mine.

Between those 2... which would work out better protection/power etc?

Also, who has been around longer?

Found it interesting that on the back of Mobil 1's bottle it says "World leading manufacturer of high performance oils".

Really?

Between Mobil 1 0W-40 and Castrol EDGE 0W-40, I would call it an even tie. Both are well established name brands, both are full synthetic PAO based, both are one of the best (if not the very best) oil that company produces, with a large list of Euro OEM specs ( like Porsche A40).

It's down to brand locality now. Or whichever you can get at the best price. Neither will let you down.

Mobil 1 0W-40 is now GTL and it lost LL01. It is also a thinner oil than it used to be, FWIW.

Not in Oz, for our Mobil 1 0W-40, we still get the PAO based brew with the BMW LL-01 cert on the bottle.

Only GTL here, that I know of, is the Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 that also carries the BMW LL-01 cert.

Add to that list the PAO based Castrol Edge 0W-40 with BMW LL-01, and you have three of the best oils in Oz that the OP should look at.

I'm also a big fan of the 100 % PAO & Ester based Penrite 10-Tenths Racing, but it carries less OEM certs.

Hey,

If I stock up on oil while it is cheap...

How long do the oil bottles last for?

Like I can I buy it now to last me next 2-3 services (4-6 bottles), or will the oil end up wrecked (not working as well as it did when new) over X amount of time (Like petrol) and not good to store?

Hey,

Never mind the previous post.

Technical support told me I can store the oil for up to 3-5 years without going off/losing its performance. So essentially I can stock up on oil when cheap without a problem to last a few services...

As far as Professionals brand goes, I spoke to Castrols Tech support, they said performance wise between Professionals 0w 40 and Edge 0w 40 A3/B4 (group 4) there is no difference.

Professionals is CO2 neutral, that is about it... ?

They said it is more a marketing thing as you cant just stock Every brand they got in shops. So either Edge or Professionals, neither is going to perform better than other. Both are Group 4 POA (in the 0w 40).

Yeah mate, stock up when it's cheap, it easily lasts a few years. That's the only way to survive in Australia and not get robbed on a quality oil change.

Yes, that makes sense, many Professional products are just rebranded and repackaged regular products, maybe with a minor angle on one or the other. But for Castrol, Castrol EDGE is their best, the Professional series will just rebrand this, but not really change it.

I do like Castrol Products, using some in my car right now.

But today the Castrol EDGE 0W-40 is $85 for 5L while the Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 is $45 for 5L (SCA sale). Mobil 1 0W-40 is about $100 for 5L. All these oils are SN, A3/B4, BMW LL-01, MB229.5 and Porsche A40. These are the hardest group of oil specs for any regular PCMO oil to meet, and it shows they are all top shelf products. With a hot car like yours, I would follow Porsche A40 myself.

All of the above beats the imported Royal Purple at $200 for 5L (Come in Spinner !!!), and which as far as I know, RP carry none of the Euro OEM specs.

BTW SCA have Penrite 10-Tenths Racing 10W-40 right now at $65 for 5L. It's a high zinc (ZDDP anti-wear agent) high HTHS (film strength) road legal (API SN and ACEA A3/B3) race oil that is 100% PAO and Ester.

[Penrite Racing 10W40]

This is one of the toughest oils out there, and only $65 to the lucky people of Australia.

Price aside...

Would you say the Penrite is better or worse overall than the castrols Castrol EDGE 0w40 A3/B4?

Does Castrol have anything else thats like race quality?

What about the mono grade oils which can be quite pricey?

While im at it... radiator coolant... any differences in this or get anything available? Ive seen mostly nulon, castrol have one n yeh...

OK I would be happy with any of these four: Castrol EDGE 0W40, Mobil 1 0W40, SHU 5W40, Penrite 10-Tenths 10W40.

The first three have the best OEM certificates, the last has the highest zinc and the most exotic base stock.

For myself, not thinking about price, I would probably go for the Penrite 10-Tenths. Just because I could. But all four should look after you fine.

They all make racing type oils for the street: Mobil 1 5W-50, Mobil 1 15W-50, Castrol EDGE 10W-60, Penrite racing 15W-50, SynPower 10W-50, Valvoline VR1 10W-40 (semi-syn). I have no problem with any of these either.

But for me SHU 5W40, Castrol EDGE 0W40 or Penrite 10-Tenths 10W40. They are my top three (personal) picks.

As for coolant, Zerex Asian if you can find it in Australia. You could ask your Toyota dealer what they use or sell.
http://www.valvoline.com/our-products/antifreeze-products/zerex-asian-vehicle-antifreeze-coolant

Otherwise I would consider Valvoline Zerex G-05 (HOAT)
http://www.valvoline.com.au/explore-our-...ze-ready-to-use

Again for oil filters either OEM Toyota or Ryco SynTec.

Just my 2 cents.

And just to be fair, I should add Valvoline SynPower 0W40 which is SN, A3/B4, MB229.5, BMW LL-01, Porsche A40.

List of 5: Castrol EDGE 0W40, Mobil 1 0W40, SHU 5W40, Penrite 10-Tenths 10W40. SynPower 0W40

You seem to be a Castrol sort of guy, so go the Castrol EDGE 0W40 ($85) or save some money with the Shell Helix Ultra 5W40 ($45 at SCA). They are all great, so choose on Brand Loyalty or choose on Price & Sales.

I always just used whatever mechanic stuck in it.

In the 68 Charger I had, mechanic only wanted HPR 50 Penrite.

In Falcon, it only had Proffessionals castrol because dealer said Castrol give warranty on engine if something goes bunk while nobody else would.

When they stopped servicing and moved more into importing/sales, my mechanic changed, he only uses Mobil 1.

So only thing I'm loyal to at the moment is confusion

Btw - Remembering from years ago when I did have my charger... people said the high ZDDP rating Penrite provide (higher than all other manufacturers) was excellent for Flat Tapped cam style engines like the old muscle cars.

However on modern style motors, and injectors, all that zinc is actually bad (long term) ???
