Which oil for long trip

Wow... a special oil needed for a 3,000 mile road trip?

Use what the manufacturer recommends. If that's 5W30... use 5W30. This need not be an anxiety-fest.

If you are not going to be able to change the oil for your entire trip, then go with a 10,000 oil and filter. The 0W30 you have... fine, use that.

10W30 isn't necessary unless you have an oil leak or live in the bowls of Arizona.

I am half way to Boston right now. ...I may go w 10w30 on th drive back which will be in late June / early July.
I do not think you will have to change the oil for the return trip. This is not PYB from the late 90's.
With the long HW drive and all he moisture kicked out, that oil should do 9000mi easy if your engines is not misfiring and the PCV is fully functioning.
Enjoy. What are your plans in the Boston area? I frequently drive south of the big city towards the Cape to visit my Mother in Law who lives in Hanover, Mass off route 3. BTW, MASS DOT just changed all the exit numbers off Route 3.

If you get a chance to visit the Isabella Stewart Gardner museum in Boston - hit it. It is exceptional.

Ok I've looked ant this picture dozens of times where is the oil hidden?

I’ll have 5k miles on this oil by the time I start my trip back. Otherwise I would not change the oil after only 3k miles.
i will be driving all over New England for the next 60 days for work

i would just drive the factory recomended interval.

I used to be pretty black and white on severe vs regular intervals. Now I am willing to drive into the gray area between in an interval for example in this interval there is just some dusty roads, 260 miles of towing, a few long idles in drive through or stop and go stopped traffic And a few local short trips. i, however Most miles are Highway driving I split the difference. 7500 on any rated synthetic when I have a 5 or 10 k choice. Seems like a good compromise. Very few people turn the key every time and run for 30 minutes or more on the highway, yet most run the regular service interval.. because. It’s regular service in North America.
i Believe the vibe has a 5 k factory interval. just Keep doing what you have been DOJ g and change the oil at the regular interval.

I’d use the AFE 0W-30, the tiny fuel-saving value it might offer would be optimized on a long highway trip vs. Stop and go driving.

You'll likely be just fine on the single oil and filter change. But if you plan on sticking around and short tripping as described for work? Keep an eye on oil. Top 'er up as needed. Change both at recommended interval for severe service or if equipped; when the OLM counts down to 10% or less.

Definitely change and top up before return trip and while traveling if steep inclines and high rev, low gear mountain climbs increases oil consumption. You'll be fine. 👍

I am half way to Boston right now. Part of my trip so far has been far from lazy. The engine has seen plenty of between 4-5K RPMs going up the mountain passes and elevations in Utah and especially Colorado (Vail). She was screaming at some points. But the Vibe handled it and I’m sure the 5w30 did so as well. I’m currently in Nebraska now and the drive is a lazy 70-75 miles per hr on cruise control. I may go w 10w30 on th drive back which will be in late June / early July.
You are planning to change it before you come back? How much driving will you be doing while there? Unless it's more than 3K miles, I think you'll be fine with 10K or less total mileage round trip.

i bought a 2004, 26k mi, toyota corolla from hertz in pdx when i returned from korea in 2006. its papers showed a series of oil changes, the most recent a couple of thousand miles earlier at a quickie lube, random 10w30 conventional as i recall. i drove it across the usa, up and down, on my leisurely way to toronto eventually 8 weeks later. midway i did a st 10w30 conventional oil change at a walmart in new mexico. all well before i discovered bitog and all good.

after arriving in canada, and being appalled by high prices there, i did an annual mobil 1 change on trips south of the border. the corolla ran great until tboned at 103k mi ten years later.

I don't think there is any difference between the oil that you drive for 3000 miles.
Just take your pick and don't overthink it.
All the cars need is oil, it does not know whether it has different viscosity or brand or anything like.
ONLY YOU KNOW.

Not to be nit picky but “the big city” is about 215 miles southwest of Boston.

I dislike cities and city life; they all seem quite big to me.

Bean town in no small city from my perspective of living in a little log cabin in the woods in NH up on a hill up from the lake.

• In 2018, Boston had a population density of 14,414 people per square mile of land. Greater Boston is
the fourth most densely populated metro area in the U.S., behind the New York Metro Area, Greater Los
Angeles, and the South Florida Metro Area.6**
