I have a 96 Civic with 218k miles on her. I am wanting to switch from regular Pennzoil 5w30 to a high mileage oil. My question is, which one would be better? I am looking at either Castrol GTX HM or the Valvoline Maxlife. The car has been consuming a fair amount of oil in the past year or so. I'm also thinking of going to 10w30. What do you guys think?

Is it burning oil or leaking oil? If it's a leak, getting it fixed may not be as expensive as one might think. If it's burning oil, that can certainly be more expensive.

If i were going to use a HM oil, i would go with Valvoline maxlife synthetic blend. I'd try the 5w30 first and see what your results are, although 10w30 certainly wont hurt anything in your part of the world.

I have used Maxlife blend in a few cars and it seems to work really well. My son uses it in a 99 Old Aurora (132Kmiles) which is known for going through oil. His engine runs smooth and does not use oil like it used to.

I don't remember exactly how much oil I put in, but it's at least a quart between changes (which I do every 4-5k miles). I just fixed 2 leaks at the distributor and valve cover, but there is another leak (I think it is the oil pan). It doesn't smoke at all, but while changing my plugs yesterday, I noticed that one had oil on the end of the plug where the electrode is. I think I'm going to try the Maxlife blend with a PureOne filter and see if that helps with the leak and consumption.

Are you saying that you had oil on the part of the plug that was inside the combustion chamber?

there are folks running shell t6 5w40, what do I know, its good stuff, but there are many many oils that would work well, Mobil makes one too.

Assuming you replaced the Valve cover gasket, the oil on the plugs could be leftover from that (hopefully).

The oil pan gasket shouldn't be too hard a job. 1 qt every 5000 miles is not really terrible at all though.

Well I replaced the VC gasket Friday night and swapped my plugs out Sunday. I checked the plugs again Sunday night and the same one had oil on it again. If it's something internal, I'm not going to bother with it. [censored] the car still gets 43mpg!
