Which gasket is adequate? (Paper, O-ring)

I'd install it exactly as the FSM says to do including the recommended sealant. Toyota FPG is good, as is Honda Ultra Flange II and the Permatex Right Stuff equivalent.
 
I sort of agree, but what I am thinking I am hearing is that Toyota wants the mechanic to use the sealant, not the O-ring in this case. The OP is thinking that the mechanic cannot be trusted to do a meticulous job and therefore would prefer an O-ring or a gasket. And I get that. I have used Hondabond enough times to know that it can make a mess, and using the right amount can be a challenge... but that would not mean I am going to go without. In my case, when I am out of my depth, the cars go to a specialist Japanese/Asian car shop, and I trust the job will be completed in workmanlike fashion. The point is that I am not going to McGuyver a solution because of nervousness about a mechanic... especially in a Toyota workhorse where you might not be back in the engine for another 100K.

My shop will use whatever means the OEM says to do be it gasket or sealant. My only point was that pump and o ring seal will work fine and actually the last lexus I did had the same exact style o-ring. I would not recommend using sealer on a part with a channel for an o-ring. RTV is only to marry flat surfaces together.

The RTV does not go into the groove, it sits just outside of the groove. These pumps seal just fine using RTV as long as you follow the instructions.

6. INSTALL WATER PUMP ASSY
a. Remove any old packing(FIPG) material from the contact surface.

b. Apply seal packing to the water pump as shown in the illustration.
Seal packing: Part No. 08826-00080 or equivalent
 
The rubber seal that goes down in a groove would be the most convenient way. Even better if it's made out of silicone.

with a help of a user we were able to source the manufacturer recommended FIPG inside the bolts but outside the channel

Interesting, to me it looks like the channels for an o-ring but according to the manual the channel is to catch spill over FIPG.

That way you don't get overflow inside the waterpump where it can flap around like a flag, break off, and then go block a valve or channel in the heater or radiator. Or so the theory goes.
 
I would use the O-ring as long as the 2 mating surfaces are flat, and no seams. It seems crazy they would recommend a FIPG when they have an O-ring groove?
It's not an o-ring gland or they would but on o-ring into it. It's a FIPG sealing gland.

Yes, they are different. But that's not to say the o-ring can't be made to work.


Don't be afraid of FIPG, they are here to stay forever. It's best to just learn to use them correctly and move on.

For water pumps and such, I use Hylomar Red.
