Which Filter for extended OCI's?

I run Amsoil sig. series oil and change it every 20,000 to 22,000 in my Dodge ram and my wife's durango. I started out using the Amsoil EO filters which is the 25,000 filter but for the last couple of OCI's I've been running Wix filters changing them at the halfway point.
Is there a filter you'd recommend over the Wix for 10,000 to 11,000 miles?
 
That is a long OCI...be careful.

I would use the newer wire backed filters like the Fram XG, P1 Synthetic, Napa Platinum. I can speak of the quality of the Fram XG and Napa Platinum, two totally excellently built filters upon my untrained examination. Have not had the pleasure of opening a P1 Syn yet, but I am sure it is good as well.

chubbs is dead on target here. I would add the Royal Purple filter to the list and suggest that if you can find an oversized filter for you application with the aforementioned premium characteristics, so much the better.

Amsoil signature series is good for Normal service – Up to 25,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first.

I have drained it after 22,000 miles and it looked better than regular oil at 3500 miles. It seems to get cleaner with each oil change.

Now on the NAPA Filter, aren't they made by Wix?
 
Purolator PureONE filers are not designed to be used for extended OCIs. It doesn't have the holding capacity for it. That's what the new Synthetic model and the Purolator-made Bosch Distance Plus are for.

I know that the NAPA GOLD is the same as WIX, can't speach for any other models.
 
Lots of good long term filters available, but the best values appear to be the Fram XG/Ultra and the new Puro syn filter.

Ironic that while the dreaded OCOD is a poor value, the Fram seems to be about the best bang for the buck in it's category.

The downside is that many of the places I buy oil and filters either don't carry the Fram ExtendedGuard line, or they only carry a few of the most common types. My local Pep Boys has a ton of RP, Mobil 1, Puro, and K&N filters, plus the whole OCOD and ExtraGuard line, but no ExtendedGuards. Of course the only reason I even set foot in there anymore is the $39 5-quart jugs of Mobil 1 in 0W40 grade- best deal and only 5-quart jugs of that grade that I've found. Other places have much better deals on Mobil 1 5w30, 0w30, 0w20, etc. but not on the 0w40.
 
Normal Service is all highway miles.

If you are doing a mix (like most folks), then you should change the oil at 15K. Better-yet, get an oil analysis to determine how much (fuel and/or coolant) contamination exists.

I would stick with the Amsoil filters for 20-22K service. Since you claim your used oil looks good after 22K, then there's no need to swap-out.... especially using filters inferior to Amsoil.

You should get that oil analyzed - especially if it's 5W-20.

yeah if I was going to go the whole 20k with one filter I would only go with a wire backed syn. like Fram xtended guard (now called Ultra), napa platinum, or royal purple. Though once I got comfortable I might give a bosch D+ a run.

If possible I would run a oversized filter. Which in my ram I can fit a full size just fine (wix 51515 size instead of stock 51085)

if you can fit a 51515 then you have a few more brands available in a wire back syn option like donaldson and baldwin.

If your still gonna do a midpoint filter change I would use a pureone.

and yeah I wouldn't be doing 20k ocis without a used oil analysis or 2 to confirm.

Agreed! The oil should be analyzed at that mileage regardless of the weight.
 
I like the Fram XG or Ultra. Like the metal screen supporting the synthetic media, protecting it from pressure tears. The sure grip allows easy installation and removal which is important if your leaving it on for a long time. filters tend to get hard to remove after a while. Can shell is very hard, not soft like many others.
 
Maybe I didn't make myself clear but I change the filter and replenish the oil at the 10,000-11,000 mark and I will continue to do this.

I ordered a couple of kits from Blackstone Labs last week so I can send in samples when I change the filters this time, I'm very curious as to what comes back in the report. My plan is to do it at the midpoint this time and if it is all good I will send in another one at 20,000 miles on bothe vehicles.

To make myself clear, I'm looking for the best filter to be used with syn oil for 10,000 miles. A $10 filter isn't a problem but the $20 Amsoil kind of stung, remember 8 quarts of oil for 20,000 miles at $10-$11 a quart and 2 filters at $7 ea. adds up to $98 plus tax each oil change.
 
by comparison to the above Amsoil $98 price I checked the local flyer for Autozone, if I was to do their $35.00 Pennzoil syn special at every 7500 miles it would add up to

35 x 3 = 105 plus tax

and I'd still need to buy 6 quarts of oil over that period at $8 since my truck holds 7 quarts. Total cost for the same $20,000 miles would be $153 plus tax and that is using a orange fram filter!
 
An interesting experiment but I think you may find that without bypass filtration well under 10um, you may not be able to go 20K+. Then again you may. Please keep us informed.

We will see from the samples I send in, but I have been doing it for over 100,000 miles on my truck with no problems so far.

Used the XG almost 2 years. Loved it. But at 6k OCI didnt make sense. For you, perfect.
