Can you point me to a thread reporting late model Hyundai AT issues, when a "suitable for use" Hyundai SP-III ATF was used in place of dealer ATF?

I've never found a legit one.

I don't know about newer Hyundai's but 2004 and older Hyundai's had this problem.

I hate to keep dragging this thread OT, but I've not seen this issue with 2004 and older either.

I'm certainly no expert, but followed this stuff closely for a few years, participating heavily on a busy Hyundai board.

The owner's manual and the maintenance record book both say to use Hyundai fluid or "other fluid which the the SP-III specification approved by Hyundai". Both Castrol import and Valvoline Maxlife say that they recommend their fluid as a suitable replacement for SP-III. I have some Maxlife already, so I plan to use that unless anyone has a good reason that I should not in this transmission. It says it is suitable for newer transmissions, and not just older ones. The fluid in the transmission is already brown-black at 29k, which I have heard is a trademark of SP-III. It may have life left, but it sure looks pretty nasty.

The only thing that bothers me about using the Maxlife is whether it is a good idea to be putting in a fluid that has seal conditioners in a nearly new trans. I don't know enough to know if that matters or not. Would I be better off with the Castrol in this car?

I haven't heard of the seal conditioners as being a problem. I know it wasn't for me. Around 30Kmi is the ideal time to do your first drain/fill cycle(s). I know the factory SPIII was nearly black @ 39Kmi in my 2008 Santa Fe's 4spd auto.

On my Kia I do a drain and fill every 15K with genuine SP-III. Seems to be doing fine so far, and the fluid is nice and pink. I'm at 63K on my Rondo and it shifts the same as it did when it was new. (which is to say, like butter when warm but kinda sloppy when cold).
