I dropped the pan on my 228k mile 2014 2500HD and what came out was pure black. Truck still shifted fine but wanted to change its ATF after having just done a good engine flush and drain and switch to Molygen. That oil only had 1k miles but was pure black coming out of the engine so I’m a firm believer is doing engine flushes.

Anyway I could only find the $38 bottle of ATF so each drain is about $60 worth. Wondering if it’s really needed or if I could go with of these cheaper two. Since I only dropped the pan I think I got almost half of the old stuff out. Want to do a few laps around the block then do it again.

For a cheap easy to get fluid castrol transmax is better than maxlife for these and many have used it with great results.

But you could get valvoline dex vi for 6.88 a quart or 27.52 for 4 on walmart online which is only a few bucks more than transmax. Both are great options and I'd toss a dart on them. Valvoline EP is also a good option and is supposed to be better than dex vi.

I’ve used various licensed makers of Dex VI. I have never let it go black, maybe just a duller red with pan drops every 50,000 miles. It has 270,000 miles on it and still shifts fine with very little “ fuzz” on the magnet since the latest pan drop earlier this year. For the last 8 years it was mostly highway miles with very little urban driving ( saving the tranny from constantly shifting.) YRMV.

My magnet was covered lol. But I did a pan drop and exchanged it then went and bought a fluid extractor and today did another exchange. I could probably stand to do another and just might since I already have the fluid here. Once I do this one I’ll never have to do it again.
