Which 5w40 oil is the best from these oils??

Yes it is. It is LL-01, A40, 229.3/229.5, 502 00/505 00

Edit: never mind. Just saw you meant 505 01, not 505 00. I would go with the motul or Castrol. Those are big brands with big R&D budgets.

If both oils meet the same specifications, anyone who would postulate which one is "better" based on the PDS is making stuff up. IMO.

Just so there is no confusion on this side of the Atlantic, we are talking about FST Castrol, NOT POS Castrol 5W40 available here.
Both are good, both are approved by MB, BMW, VW etc. for their latest specs.
 
I was wondering, since you are in the UK and have a "Pumpe-Düse" TDI, how has been the European experience with VW 507 oils and the PD cams? My understanding is that the 507 oils came to Europe before than in North America since there were a number of PD TDIs with diesel particle filters (DPF) requiring a VW 507 spec oil. Thanks in advance for your response.

The Red Line oil is significantly more expensive than the others but will it be worth it? I change my oil once a year (every 12 months) and do circa 5k miles a year (70% city and 30% motorway). Note, I live in the UK.
