My dad has a really old fishing reel that he loves, but there is a small oddly shaped gear in it that is made of a really soft metal, and its teeth have worn down. We aren't even sure of the brand of the reel. So, I was wondering if you guys know of a place that would make me a new one, or possibly repair it. I only mention repair because a friend of mine thought that a small town jeweler might try to fix it if I catch them on a slow day.

Any ideas? I'd like to surprise the old man for Christmas.

I'd try to find a local machine shop. The smaller the shop, the better. A small shop would probably be more willing to take on odd jobs. And I'm sure all decent shops have access to all types of metals through their dealers.

Yeah, local machinist. My wife's grandfather is a machinist who essentially is retired, but stays busy doing one off/fun jobs such as this.

I'm sure you have a local machinist who is willing to take this on for you.

A picture of the part would help.

But yes, there are retired machinists that could help you out.
