Where are we finding 502 spec synpower?

None of the auto parts stores around me have a 502 spec synpower oil anymore it seems... Interested n using the 5w-40 in the rabbit when needed, but I cant find it on any shelves anymore. I dont know that Ive ever seen the 5w30 MST but would try that too (or will that produce TBN loss results like the Mobil 1 ESP?).

Where are you seeing these oils?

I have been looking for Synpower 5w-40 in stores for a little over a year now. I found one Auto Zone about 50 miles from me that was willing to order it for in store pickup - otherwise your best bet is Amazon. But at $50 / 6qt it's a bit of a ripoff.

None of my local parts stores even show a Valvoline 5w-40 in their catalog that they can order. I had one O'rileys manager tell me that Valvoline doesn't make a 5w-40. I showed him the qt. bottle I keep in my car and all he could say is "I'll be da**ed".

Blast! My pepboys used to have it but not anymore. Never seen it at AZ. One NAPA didnt have it, will need to try the other.

Otherwise maybe Ill give lubromoly a try... since Napa carries it.
 
Napa is the only store I ever seen Synpower 5W-40 at. They only carry the MST version. If they don't have it on the shelf. They will have it at their local warehouse. The HST only comes in 55 gallon drums for dealers.
 
And the MST = low SAPS, right? Also low TBN? After my Mobil 1 ESP experiment Im not running that in a ga$$er.

Though perhaps synpower MST at 7 TBN will last better than Mobil 1 ESP 5w30 at x TBN...
 
That is what confuses me on the MST. It meets VW 502 spec, but also the low SAP BMW and MB specs?

I had Blackstone do a VOA of this oil about a year ago. TBN was 7.2, ended up at 4.3 after 6k miles in my 2.5.
 
Well if it met the 504 spec then it meets the 502 one by default, though TBN retention may not be sufficient for the OCI... That is what I found with using 504 spec oils with US-gasoline.
 
I don't know if Valvoline even tested the MST to meet the 504 spec? Maybe they didn't want to pay for it, seeing that isn't a spec used in North America?

This oil, like Amsoil AFL, is a 229.51/505.01/LL04 oil that also meets 502.00.
 
For clarification:

MST = MID SAPS Technology
HST = HIGH SAPS Technology

The ONLY low SAPS Valvoline is XL-III which is a bulk only item.

SynPower 5W-40 is certified for LL-04, 229.51 and VW 505.01 so it should have a bit more bang than the Mobil ESP. I think the SynPower is a older technology but enless your engine specifically requires a low SAPS fluid the Valvoline should work nicely. Valvoline has recently had a package change to reflect the 5W-40 as being 5W-40 MST.
 
Both BMW LL-04 and MB 229.51 are both low SAPS specs. The VW 501.1 is mid SAPS. That is why I keep asking how Valvoline can have a oil that meets both low and mid SAPS. My head hurts.

The spec SAPS levels are maximums. (less than or equal to xyz percent)

LL04 and 229.51 don't exceed the additive levels set by 505.01, while still passing the performance tests for all 3 and the others.

EDIT: The same way Mobil 1 ESP 5w30 can meet all the previous specs it does being low-SAPS.

It looks like Napa has Synpower on sale for $4.99 a quart. I might go pick up 5 quarts of the MST for my stash.
 
It is on O'Reilly's website. Seems like only certain stores carry it. For example in Michigan Royal Oak carries it, doesn't do me any good since I am around Ann Arbor.

This should work, but often employees are unmotivated to help and are absolutely lazy to research anything, so make printouts from the website proving that another store carries it, its availability, along with the other store's phone # and put in a request for them to ship it to your store. It clearly states that it can become available in 1-2 business days. The least amount of work they have to do the better your chances are to get it.

A few months ago I asked about it, the circular clearly had a container labeled 5W40, they carry it, but you have to insist on it with solid proof.
