At a Walmart in St. Johns today and Castrol GTX is 15.50 and Valvoline is 15.00. Granted they are good conventional oil but when you can pay 21 bucks for Pennzoil Platinum what gives? Conventional oil will do the job but the advantages of PP over GTX and Valvoline in severe applications like extended drain intervals, better tbn retention and better cold flow properties make the conventional oil's look overpriced. MC5K 11.50 and Pennzoil 13.50 for 5 quarts looks like the better choices for conventional. I assume Castrol has to keep food of John Force's table and Valvoline has to do the same with their involvement in racing.

I suspect conventional pricing @ walmart is a function of their data gathering, sales and demographics. Some people have been using GTX for years and "have to have GTX"; Some people won't touch PYB for historical and inaccurate reasons.

Yes lot's of shelf space for GTX but less for Valvoline. I think you are correct simple gifts, some consumer have to have their brand at whatever cost. It just bugs be at these price points are higher than MC5k and Pennzoil which are just as good or better oil.

The recent significantly reduced cost was much of why I switched to syn and am staying with it. Just doesn't make sense to buy GTX or PYB for $11 when I can get PP on the same rollback as to the other two, and when the $19 rollback price for PP is $2 more than the regular price for the brand name dinos. Makes more sense to me to just stockpile the PP at the rollback.
I plan to have enough by the end of next week (if the rollback holds) to run PP year round for at least the next 2-3 years.

wal mart is a quick learner remember when all the ultra had dust on it and when pyb went up in price? nobody bought it and the price came down!

Don't forget that wal-mart is just a BITOG baseline we compare prices against. If you are beating WM you've done great but there's better deals out there...just not daily.

Over the past several years, AA had two BOGO deals, last summer, Wally had a ten dollar gift card MIR on five quarts, limit two MIRs, while SOPUS also had their own ten dollar MIR.
Meijer clearanced PP last fall, and I bought four cases at $1.49/qt (all I could find), more than half of which is the less-loved 10w30.
Deals come if you wait for them.

i would love to run into PP for $1.49. that was a great deal. i would have bought a lot as well.
i have so many oil changes worth of oil, in my oil cabinet, that i have plenty of time for the deals and rebates to show up.

That's why I'm buying up PP now. Bad time of year for 10W30 sales and I'm guessing WM is over stocked and dumping the excess. By grabbing a couple years worth now I can wait patiently for quite awhile for the best deals. 10W30 is fine for our climate up here. Just not spec'd on very many oil caps, and people mistakenly assume its wrong for winter, when its pour point is lower than that of many 5W30s.
