While I mostly agree... Few years ago our washer up and quit. No readout on it, so all it could do was beep at us. Took us several days to realize that the magnet we had strangely found near the washer belonged to the soap tray--we had picked it up, thought it odd, and (thankfully) stuck on the fridge. Low and behold, on a lark I looked up and at the tray, and there was a spot for that strange little magnet. Snapped back in place, and that's been the only hiccup in the last 10 years.
A readout as to "soap tray error" would have been helpful!
Now our microwave is older, probably 15 years or so old. Does have a simple digital readout. When we bought the house it gave no indication of problems--but didn't make any heat either. [I missed it on the home inspection.] Got it fixed on my dime (output tube and diode). Fast forward a couple of years and it quits again. This time the display popped an error code. Quick websearch indicated main relay failure so I opened it up. Relay was obsolete but I found a similar unit and jumpered it in, and it's been fine since.
Simple readout of a simple error, and it was simple repair. What a concept.

I've whined for years that all cars ought to be required to scroll out whatever OBD trouble codes it has without needing a code scanner. If my microwave could do that--why not my $20k automobile? [Yes I know a number of the trucks now do that, but it wasn't that common until a few years ago.]
