When to add oil

My truck burns about a quart of oil in 4k miles. Should I ad a full quart then or should I be adding a half quart when it down a half quart or does it matter. Oil is PU.

Agreed; better to add a little once and awhile than to let it get below "add" then put in a quart.

When I had a burner, I'd check every time I filled up with gas.

If I check the oil and notice its lower I'll just add it right there and then. Even it its a quarter quart low. The hood is already up so just a little more effort and its full again. Plus it now has a small fresh dose of additives.

I'm in the add 1/2 qt at the time crowd too. Extra insurance for the times you're not paying attention and suddenly you're more than a quart low. Like SS said above - the hood is already open - take the 30 seconds extra to top it off.

Unless it's my 428 Cobra Jet Torino, I add only at the quart low, sometimes not even then(like if OCI is due in another 500-750mi)... No issue in 46 years of vehicle ownership...

Because of the front sump pan, the Torino will drop oil pressure on hard acceleration if it's more than half quart low, I keep it full and usually a bit over...

In the summer heat, an extra 1/2 quart can make a different. Add oil when it's down 1/4 to 1/2 quart.

I got my first car 43 years ago. I've always been a half quart guy. Several of my cars only needed a half quart to get to the change interval. The 3 cars I have now don't usually need any top up.

The "add" mark on the dipstick is there because that's what it means.
You may also see lower consumption with the oil down below the "full" mark.
I know that I do with my BMW.
Add a quart when it needs a quart.
No harm done.

I add whatever is needed....my commute is all 75 MPH on the way in and 2 hours stop-n-go on the way home.....we've seen pavement temps of 120'F on the beltway so I keep my oil full.

I add at the add mark. Many engines actually slow their oil consumption as the level drops a little bit. Old Mopars are semi-notorious for doing that- burning down a half a quart to a quart and then slowing dramatically.

yep, I drive an 88 Dodge Aries with the 2.2L and have noticed this too......typically, in a 6k OCI, I'll top off about the 3k, then the 5k mark.....about a quart for a 6k OCI......not too bad IMHO.

But yea, I'm in the mindset, don't add til it hits the add mark....have always been told it's worse to overfill, than underfill....

Thanks for all the responses. My Lincoln/Ford Manual says to not fill until a quart low. I assume this is to prevent overfilling. It just drives me crazy checking oil level all the time knowing I'm going to be a quart low someday. I do like to add as needed.

If consumption is a quart in 4K, then check the oil after the first two thousand miles of an OCI and every thousand thereafter.
Consumption tends to be pretty consistent with any given engine, and only gradually trends upward, if it ever does.

How long do you run this oil? If you're changing it at, say, 8k.. I would top off with a full quart at 4k then change it when it's a quart low (assuming linear consumption).
