They borrowed a truck, went to the government cheese depot and would get a load of the gov't five pound cheese blocks that are supposed to go to the food stamp recipients. They sold it to the local housewives for $1 per 5 pound block. Steaks from the local grocery store.
Anything at all that had a least a little monetary value, or could be traded for a future can of beer was stolen.
Oh yeah, New York. We had an office there once at a previous job. One day we couldn't call there because the junkies had stolen the copper wires on the telephone poles. Took a few days before they ran new wires. This was before cell phones were popular and only one guy there had one.
