Not everyone is a squid that ride crotch rockets does wheelies and neglect maintenance and personal safety gear. I crashed my 1992 Yamaha FRZ1000 in 2004 and would be dead or without a chin had I not been wearing my helmet. In the ambulance ride to the hospital the paramedics said I was lucky I had on my helmet and jacket. Most of the nurses/doctors at the hospital said the same thing and that I was one of the few motorcycle accident 'victims' that walk out of the hospital abit pretty good road rash.
I always ride with helmet, jacket, gloves, sidi or icon boots, kevlar lined jeans.
Me too, I have been hit by a car years ago. Helmet, leather bomber jacket, heavy boots & jeans. I got up and walked into the ambulance. This was on my Yamaha. Lucky for me the owner of the dealership I bought it from gave all new buyers a free helmet from the "helmet wall" in his shop (you got to pick any one you wanted). He then spent 10 minutes explaining why it was so important for riders to wear one. So my very first day of motorcycling in 1974 was with a helmet. Since then I have only ridden once for 30 minutes without one to see what it was like. I felt naked without it on my head and turned around and went home and put it back on. BTW, I still remember the rash...yuk.
I hear you. I rode once around the block without my helmet, for the same reason, just to see what it is like and I felt, like you said, naked, and it scared the [censored] out of me. You will never see me riding without my helmet. I once rode from Newport to Old Saybrook CT, about 1.5 hours away on a Sunday just to do it, I stopped for lunch at some little diner. The host sat me and said that I was first rider he saw today wearing a helmet. I told him you will never see me without it especially on the highway. I saw maybe 20-30 riderson the highway 70mph + and maybe 5 had on helmets. Just cant see how you can ride without a helmet, especially at highway speeds. Specs of sand, bugs, etc.. hitting you in the face, that hurts!
To each their own. I still wave at riders, no matter what they ride or wear.
