Whats your best driving tip?

People were instructed not to place hands at 10 and 2 starting around 1993. I can’t believe that 30+ years later this is still done
No, they instructed me to do that back about 20 years ago. I can't drive like that. I'm a lefty, so one left hand at about 7:30 and we're good. I can let off and rest my hand on my lap if need be. I've never hit another car in that time. Now of course if I need to turn, then I believe I use both hands. Idk, i don't really think about it to honest, depends on the vehicle, some take more effort than others to move the wheel.

9 and 3 for full control without needing to shuffle, just like on the track. They actually teach the kids now to run them 4/8 or so below middle to avoid air bag injury.

It’s hilarious if one Googles 10 and 2 it leads to injury lawyers’ websites. It was around 1993 that drivers were trained not to do that. But assuming a driver gets a license at 16 and never has contact with any sort of training again, how would they know. That’s why it’s still done I guess

the smith method:

Smith System is a defensive driving technique that focuses on five key rules to help drivers stay safe:
  • Aim high: Look at least 15 seconds ahead to scan for traffic and hazards

  • Get the big picture: Be aware of your surroundings at all times

  • Keep your eyes moving: Constantly scan your environment to stay alert

  • Leave yourself an out: Maintain safe following distances and avoid situations that could box you in

  • Make sure they see you: Remove assumptions about other drivers

Excellent advice. ^^^^^

Off Topic:
I drive on the Florida Turnpike 90% of the time and always trying to avoid a situation that gets me ‘boxed in’ like I’ve mentioned previously about a NASCAR style wreck with a pack of slower vehicles.

The last thing I want is a box truck tailgating me and on his cellphone.

I will ‘snake’ around the slower traffic and get up to 90-100 mph just to keep my distance from these drivers.

I drive my personal cars the same as I did the 40k lb fire engines during my career as a firefighter.
1. Don’t tailgate
2. Drive for the weather conditions
3. As you approach an intersection lift foot off of accelerator and cover the brake pedal.
4. Lean slightly forward when checking side mirrors to help scan the blind spot. Blind spots on a fire engine are huge. Don’t hangout beside one.
5. Expect others to do something stupid.

I was returning home from grocery shopping one Saturday morning (7:30 and sunrise) , my light was green and a guy on Lance Armstrong style bicycle blew through his red light. My head is ALWAYS on a swivel as I approach any intersection regardless of the time of day.

I immediately hit the brakes and avoided killing him, I would have T-boned him at 40 mph in a 3500 pound vehicle if I wasn’t alert and 100 mg of caffeine in my system.

I honked my horn and he was listening to music on his ear pods. A very, very near miss.

If I wasn’t alert his family would had to identify his dead body at Medical Examiner’s office…..

(y) Close calls like that change your perspective. A long time ago I was leaving work with my freshly minted driver's license on a narrow residential street and noticed a little kid riding his bike on the sidewalk and thought, "I bet he's going to fall over into the street in front of me." Sure enough he did.

Much more recently, I had another premonition and had already lifted my foot off the accelerator when a kid ran between some parked cars in front of me so I was able to stop in time.

I guess the driving advice here would be to listen to your gut as your subconscious sometimes notices what's going on before your conscious mind does.

As many said. Always look way out at brake lights, traffic etc. Always look around constantly. Try to avoid being next to others. Expect them to do stupid things and not look. In traffic on a 3 lane I prefer right or left not middle so I have an escape route. Leave extra space, if people cut in front, back off and leave space. Bad weather leave extra space. 3 lane no traffic, I prefer middle for lots of road room either way.

Since all my cars have winter tires I tell the kids/wife others when slowing down, seriously watch mirror for those behind you since they might not be able to stop and you can see their panicked faces. Use that escape route from above and move out of the way to give them room.

In my daughters car, not sure where she got it, small hanging angel from mirror that has "Never drive faster than your Guardian angel can fly"

3 and 9 or lower. This is due to the airbag in the steering wheel. When the bag deploys and your hands are higher on the wheel, you can end up punching yourself in the face harder than Mike Tyson.

After seeing Mike Tyson's last fight, I'd have to say that doesn't sound like much of a threat. In a crash, he would gently grab the airbag and start chewing on it, and then you'd just feel bad for him.

Something I learned at the mandatory bad driver school, for going 9 over.

Stop precisely just before the line at intersections. Don't go over and don't hold back.

The instructor was a FL State Trooper and had quite a presentation on this simple aspect of driving. Obviously the sensors and cameras that control the light were one aspect. The other was the engineering behind the position. You will nearly always have an adequate view from that position. A bike lane is a reason for a displaced threshold, because people don't look both directions when turning right. Stop at the line and look.

I've never been in an accident where I was driving/moving. I've been hit when stopped at the light multiple times. And I've been a pax in multiple crashes. Even so, I regularly stopped beyond the line. Not any more.

FL has a 'Permissive Yellow', with a 4.5 second yellow, and delayed green at larger intersections. Slamming on the brakes when the light just turns yellow is not necessary. Prevents accidents, and prevents you from stopping in the intersection.

3 motorcycle police officers hit and killed by distracted woman.

She swerved to avoid crashing into slower moving vehicle and hit 3 motorcycle cops on side of road.

I see soooooo many idiots on their cellphone while driving. So far no charges have been filed but I’m sure they are investigating her cellphone data / usage at time of accident.

Assume every other driver is an idiot.

I assume every other driver is a DRUNK or STONED idiot.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Some geezers wide eyed FREEZE if you assume they see you and suddenly they do see you. Never assume, just be patient and let them do whatever the heck they are doing.

I'd imagine you could break an arm. I winder how many people have broken teeth after the airbag deploys. They say not to have your hand on the horn just before impact
