I'm not sure if this was ever illustrated in my drivers Ed class years ago, but my brother told me to always know where all the vehicles are on the road around you, so you can change lanes quickly if needed without having to look at your mirrors first. The other was try to make sure people dont stay right next to you. Pretty sure that second one's in the drivers Ed book, but I swear most people these days barely even pay attention to what's in front of them lol

I drive a bus, through all kinds of traffic, including Brussels.

The key is to take action early, solve issues before they become an issue. The alternative is driving reactive and that just means everybody else on the road decides how fast you, when you brake and how hard.

I pay comparatively very little attention to what's going on 100 ft or less in front of me (city traffic and speeds), I'm more interested beyond that. Outside of the city that can be 1000 ft, you know, the place I might need in 20-30 seconds....

Considering some of the young people I’ve driven with at work I don’t even know what’s considered common knowledge and what’s a tip these days.

Ocular driving, ie; drive with your eyes. Constantly scan and look way ahead. Look where you want to go, especially when faced with making a quick maneuver. Situational awareness is paramount and goes hand in hand with the above. Have done many thousands of hours in the right seat and always amazed at how little folks look around. Every time in a situation that will end up bad, I look at their eyes. Most have a fixed gaze at the front of the car and just follow where the car takes them. Once they become aware that we are physiologically programmed to respond to visual inputs, and they consciously look where they want the car to go, they are surprised at how easy it is to avoid driving upside down in a ditch.

Driving 70 vs 75 adds less than 5 min to a 1 hour trip. Unless your on a trip >3hours you can't really make up much time.
When I drive my Civic I usually stick close to the speed limit as it gets me much better gas mileage and I’m not usually in too much of a hurry since I like to give myself a lot of extra time to get places. That type of driving rewarded me with an average MPG of 49.8 over 7000 miles worth of driving in the warmer months this year.
