So I have the itch for a new motorcycle and have been looking at the KTM 690 Enduro and the Husqvarna TE610. I was a little surprised to discover that both require 10W-60 motor oil. They're both liquid-cooled, so does anyone know what the deal is--why do they spec such a thick oil?
What's with the 60-weight oils?

The design engineers want insure you don't go buy Supertech 20w50 and run it like a lot of guys do with other bikes and then turn in a warranty claim when it blows . So they spec an oil that is only made in real high standards usually synthetic and not openly distributed. Then they stock it at their dealers with a nice mark up.
