Some of the old school gearheads, pre-synthetics, loved the green stuff. Kendall Superb 100.

In the 90's, Kendall had a synthetic before they were everywhere. It was called "Kendall Elite" and could be had in 5-50 weight, IIRC.

Suddenly, I heard nothing much about Kendall, and for sure..their synthetic. AGAIN---they had one out WAY before it was the norm. Just the other night, much to my shock, I saw KENDALL SYNTHETIC 10-30 at a cheesy Circle K store!!!

Wanted about $6 for it.

I think the company had a rich history. I bet at one time, KENDALL was a respected dino. They had a SYNTHETIC out their way early. Curious, how it compared to Mobil 1---still then, not known too well.

I bet the new Kendall Synthetic, is a Group III base...

ANYONE???

Kendall Oil was owned by Witco Chemical (renamed Witco Corporation) for many many years. Some time in the '90s Witco got into trouble and sold off Kendall. The brand "died" for a while but is now coming back. Their oils were top drawer stuff in the old days. Getting good reports currently too.

American Refining Group, Inc
In 1997, American Refining Group, Inc. purchased the Kendall®/Amalie® refinery located in Bradford, PA from Witco Corporation. As a result of the sale of the Kendall and Amalie® brands to a third party, a new name was given to the products produced at the site - Brad Penn® Premium Pennsylvania Grade Lubricants.
I'm currently running Brad Penn® Penn Grade 1 Partial Synthetic SAE 10w30 Racing Oil ,their version of Kendall GT-1 blend.
I ran a VOA , and have no issues with the oil.Seems to be a sound performer. My used oil analysis on it will no doubt be FUBAR because of check engine light/computer faults that the truck has.
I did a freezer test with:
This oil,Torco 10w30 SR-1,& Pennzoil 15w40 Long Life CI-4/SL.Brad Penn flowed faster @ 0°F than the others.Torco & the Pennzoil were nearly equal in terms of cold flow.Either the Torco is sub-par cold performer,or, Pennzoil is a superb one despite it's 15W rating.

Triangle Gasoline Co., in Butler
Send Brad Penn an e-mail to find their nearest distributor.

Actually ALL the ConocoPhillips 5W-20 and 5w30 viscosities brands (Conoco, Phillips 66, 76, and Kendall) have been reformulated (GF-4) to at least a "synthetic" blend (well over 50% Group III, the rest at least Group II with perhaps some negligible component of Group I as the additive carrier) blended and bottled since August 16. 10w30 to follow no later than next spring. Now if I could just find any of those brands out here on the west coast at discounters...

ULVER. I remember Kendal was the first oil
that I started to use way back in 1974. The
GT1 was green (just like GC). It was known
even in Canada that this was probably one of
the best oils around. My friends Dad used it
in the early 60's and I't just stuck in my
mind. Only a few small auto parts stores
carry this oil. In fact, my brother still
uses this oil in his 1980 firebird which he
has used since the car was new. I wish it
would come back to being popular again.

1. Based on pour point and flash point, I suspect that it probably is group III base, and hydroisomerized slack wax as opposed to PAO, but I have no info other than that.

I doubt it uses slax wax as a base oil but if it is made like this 76 10w30 Synthetic it is PAO/Ester .

Same oil as in the USA but better product description and safety sheet

Look at the all PAO 5w-40 while there .

West coast guys , heads up on the 5w-40 , it's 4 bucks a quart .

Add Circle K to the list of ConocoPhillips brands.

The last time I looked at data sheets for Kendall syn 5W-40 and 76 syn 5W-40, they looked indentical. With the new formulations required, I expect to see more indentical formulations within the recently merged companies...ConocoPhillips, ChevronTexaco, Shell's family of brands, etc. The differences within a brand family may be when one label is made for a higher or lower price point.

Yeah, I probably should have left out the part I knew nothing about (PAO versus hydrocracked mineral) and stuck to simply reporting the numbers I found.

Still, the numbers seem good...

I am planning on using Kendall GT-1 full synthetic after looking at the numbers and comparing it to other synthetics.

Here are my thoughts:

1. Based on pour point and flash point, I suspect that it probably is group III base, and hydroisomerized slack wax as opposed to PAO, but I have no info other than that. (This issue has been beat to death on the "Syntec versus Mobil1" thread, and I don't really care because IMHO the issue is does the oil work, not whether they bend the rules as to what is/is not "real" synthetic oil).

2. GT-1 synthetic 10w30 posts some pretty good numbers: HT/HS is 3.2; Flash point is 455 degrees F; pour point is -39 degrees C; VI of 148 (M1 is 147); 100C viscosity of 10.5; and cold cranking viscosity of 4050 at -25 degrees C (M1 is said to be 3967 at -25 degrees C).

3. It meets the other major specs, including ILSAC GF-3, Japanese valve train, etc.

I plan on chaning oil as soon as the Avalanche gets out of the body shop (I watched as the guy simply back into my brand new car....

3K miles later, Blackstone will tell me what they found.
