What's up with Fuel Prices ....

Old Coot Guesstimate (tm).

$4 per gallon gas by mid-summer.

Long-term prognostication:

In a few years we will se swarms of mini-cars in urban/suburban areas. Itty bitty things getting 60 mpg, maybe more.

Quieter, cmaller, more room on the roads, more room in parking lots..... many folks will wonder why we didn't go smaller sooner.

Expect smaller prices, too, especially needed as so many Americans continue outsourceing and have to take service sector jobs paying less.

Once demand drops, so will the price. If people would cut back on driving we'd see the price drop quicker.

Around here, most places are $2.85 to $2.89. Not good, but could be worse. I expect that they'll on average fall slightly over the next three months.

Paid $2.99 for diesel this afternoon at a nearby Exxon. Regular unleaded was $3.49.

Diesel is slowly dropping around here, gas just keeps going up. Glad I don't have to buy gasoline. And glad I get ~40 mpg.

I saw $4.03 for regular in Redwood City, CA yesterday.

The highest price for regular here in SF is $4.33 at a Shell station downtown right now.

I Just paid $3.35 for reg at the Safeway. (but got -.10)

"2.85 to $2.89" and Mori paid "$4.03" - to me that is one rip-off spread for a commodity!

Californians get the highest price as CA set a different blend for gas ( along with some NE states). When a few CA refineries tank for repairs or shutdown- prices on the refinery spread soar as fewer other refineries in the US or world can ship CA spec gas to fill in the shortage. Over time the CA refineries run full again or outside CA refineries finally switch to CA gas to take advantage of the big price spread. Under the best conditions the CA spec gas is 15- 20 cents a gal over rest of US gas.

Mori beats me at $4.03/gal, but I just paid $3.55/gal here in SoCal. Premium is now hitting $4, but I've seen that (and paid that) before. Luckily I have a short commute.

At least $4 this summer, $1.5/L in Canada.
There is only so much production coming out of refineries, while people seem to assume an infinite omnipresent supply. Either prices will keep going up and/or gas stations will periodically be empty, have no gasoline for sale.
One way or another people will have to realize that you cannot go anywhere anytime for any reason.

P.S.: Couple of my neighbours drive 5L engines to work. Stuff like that will have to stop.

On my 220 mile/day commute I still see lifted F350s going 95+mph at WOT very regularly... Gas isn't high enough, simple as pie.

$3.55/gal here yesterday.

I found my log book for my car. In 2004 December I paid $1.67/gal in Iowa (West Union - north eastern part). Filled my tank for under $16.

Now why can't I go back in time and pay that much for gas again?

I get 20mpg or maybe 23 if I am careful. Its a 3.0 ltr sohc mitsu outlander. So, even if gas reaches 6 bucks a gallon, I'd still be driving it. Its cheaper than going out and buying a yaris or a bike for summer.

This thinking is dumb. Why should it stop at $6/g????? Is there some sort of law that stops the price at $6. So long as you and most other people think this way the price will keep going up. In the end you won't be able to give the #@$%! thing away for free.

Look I am not saying we should all throw away our cars/trucks/SUVs today. By all means get the most of your current machine. Nevertheless, we'll have to rationalize our use of vehicles. Perhaps you can drive a 3L engine to work, but not 5L trucks and SUVs. I seem to get to work using a 2L engine, 2 passangers. Half the Asia and Africa get around on 500cc motorcycles.

At the end when you have to drop $500 to fill a tank in you 5L truck and I pay $30 to fill my motorcycle, guess who can last longer.

So try to get your math right.

Hey ninja my 5.7 liter engine gets 24.5 mpg on my 100 mi round trip commute. If I put the car back to stock (swap the 3600rpm stall back to stock and the 2.73 gears back init would go back to 28 mpg at 75 mph. The size of the engine does not correlate to mpg. I have driven many v6 cars that got worse mileage. I refuse to ever drive another 4cyl. I will be happy when I can buy a chevy Volt and recharge it with nuclear generated electricity.
