What's this gunk?

For what it's worth, my car's central door locking system is also "vacuum"-actuated. It works and doesn't suck.

It's pretty expensive to produce.

A recall when I was commissioning the hydrogen plant at work, that a graduate engineer came to talk to me.

"Steve, you've got a vacuum pump on the plant, where do you get the vaccum from ?"..."and what do you do with it ?"

I replied that we got the vacuum from the gas suppliers in tankers. And as vacuum is lighter than anything, we pump it in on top of the hydrogen, displacing the air to the bottom of the storage cylinder. Then when the cylinder is full of vacuum, we introduce hydrogen from the bottom (because even hydrogen is heavier than vacuum), and when the cylinder is full of hydrogen, we pump the vacuum back into the tanker to be sent off and purified...He nodded and thanked me (and the graduates have got worse since then.

Next funny thing was watching a vacuum pump tech trying to get -96kPa (gauge) when we've only got 93kPA absolute on the site...it commissioned at -96kPa in Sydney.

Old Jeep full sizes have vacuum reservoirs to keep the vacuum actuated heater controls, cruise controls and 4wd controls operating. Additionally, the various add on widgets used to control smog equipment are all vaccum powered. There are about 30' of vacuum hoses under the hood of 88 Grand Wagoneer Properly set up, no mean feat, it has passed MA dyno emmissions tests with high margins

Mori, if that stuff is that nasty on your skin---how do you apply it from a bag? And is it like seam sealer that you can buy in a caulking tube for easy dispensing? Seam sealer is the stuff you see the skin of auto hoods glued to the framework with.

Cruise control actuator, EGR valve, heater flaps, fuel pressure regulator, EVAP purge valve, door locks, intake manifold switchover, and brake booster are all vacuum operated on my car. The AWD is however purely mechanical.

Doctor mori wears gloves in the OR. That gunk is about as soft as chewing gum or soft polymer clay, but much more tacky. As I previously said, I don't know about seam sealer. I've never done any bodywork on any car. I'll have to take a look if the hood is really glued on...

Tried it out:

A piece of sealer can be cleanly pinched off and shaped with fingers without too much stickiness or much residue remaining to fingers. Kneading the material, and heat, turns it quickly into a sticky nightmare. The stuff I bought years ago was black, this new stuff is grey. It reminds me of Bostik Blu Tack and Tac'N Stick putty, both of which can, by the way, be used as kneadable erasers.
