What's the shortest interval your OLM went

I don't think I ever seen an OLM recommend an oil change in less than about 4,000 miles, whether the car was driven a mile at a time in the cold of winter, or in gridlock traffic in Summer etc. I heard someone say one set off at around 2800 miles but I think it just didn't get reset.

So if you have an OLM or know someone who's car does, can you post the shortest interval that it set at? Or maybe just the shortest predicted life the OLM was saying?

parents silverado with OLM and driven in city and lots of stop and go short trips goes off at 5k

See I almost wonder if they will never go off below 3K or 5K no matter what. Well good to see it at least trips at 5k. Be nice to see an UOA on that. Oh yeah are you folks drivinmg in the mild climate of Cali?

Mechanicx,

I have a 2008 Impala with the 3.5L Flex-Fuel V-6. Here in warm Tucson, AZ it's been as low as 6K and as high as 12.5K which is the limit for Conventional oil specd engines like this one.

If I am not mistaken Drew99GT from cold Colorado Springs has mentioned his mother's identically equipped Impala has been as low as 2200 miles during the winter with short trip usage.

I can't speak for other makes but the GM OLM is the real thing and not just a fancy "idiot light" reminder.

Take care,
Gary

My bad. If that is the shortest for that car, I'd hate to see the longest lol. I assume it requires synthetic and has a big sump, but still that seems silly long.

Cool, I wonder if Dodge's OLM sheme is similar to GM's. Pardon my ignorance but is this a diesel? could you elaborate on your driving conditionsand temperatures? Also I think this is verifying the wisdom of 3k mile oil changes for those who don't have an OLM or dn't trust one.

Thanks. I also believe the GM OLM is the real deal, with some reservations, but if the OLM will go 12k in some conditions but only 2200 in short trip/cold weather situations, then it would seem folly to do extended OCI or go much over 3k in similar conditions if you don't have an OLM/no regular used oil analysis/don't feel your engine is in prime condition, etc. Maybe even 2-3k OCI wouldn't be unreasonable in similar situations.

Not sure what system Jeep used on the 08 Liberty but here are the figures for the first OCI according to Jeeps system.

Driving conditions remain exactly the same till this day. I run it about 40 miles RT two or three a week on the highway. It was bought late December 2007 the change oil light came on 7/14/08 at 2602 miles. I now have 8900 miles on it and the light has not come on since 7/14/08. I will totally ignore the system. I change oil every 6 months as per the OM, next year I will probably switch to 1 year OCI's.

BMW's OLM is whacky, BMW claims you should go 15k on an oil change even though many articles in BMWCCA publications caution that it's only in the interest of BMW preserving their "low maintenance" and "free oil changes under warranty" reputation, not in the best interest of the engine.

We own several GM trucks.

My personal Silverado has gone almost 14k miles, but almost always at least 10-12.

Our Savana 3500's usually go about 4k, but get extensive stationary operation. Many times they aren't shut off at all in an entire day.

I have owned 3 GM vehicles( 05/07 Silverado 5.3L & 08 Equinox 3.4L )with an OLM and all 3 worked about the same. I always change my oil at 5K so I never let it go until it tripped. When I would change it at 5K the OLM was in the 20-50% range. Varied by time of year and if I was towing a lot. My Sister has a 2006 Impala 3.5L and she takes like 8 months or more just to do 5K but it is like 90%+ city. Her OLM is usually in the 50% range when I tell her to do an OC around 6 months.

My current vehicle( 2008 Dodge Ram 5.7L )has an OLM too. It tripped at exactly 2500 miles DESPITTE the fact I did an OC at 1000 miles to dump the FF and reset the OLM after. I just reset it when it did. Very common with Chrysler OLM's to trip right at 2500-2600 miles. I believe, based on how many people have said so, they do it purposely for the 1st OC to be done then. You wouldn't think it would trip though if it had been reset? Maybe I did not do it right resetting mine is why it came on at 2500?

I have read some people say that the Chrysler OLM will kick on every 2500 until 10K is reached at which point it starts to lengthen out. However, I can say at least in my truck this is not true. I just did an OC and it was like 4975 miles and the OLM had not kicked on. After that 1st trip at 2500 it has not kicked on( I have reset it each time I have done an OC - 3 X's total ).

I liked the GM OLM better than the one in my 08 Ram. On my GM vehicles you could bring up the OLM on your DIC to see where things were at. On my Ram you never know when the light will pop on. On newer Dodges, with higher trim levels, I guess they do show a % like GM.

Daughters '00 Olds Alero 3.4(college car) that we have owned since new. Now at 165,000 mi. Soonest OLM has gone off is 5,200, longest is 7,800. Never added even 1 qt. of makeup oil. I live by the OLM.

And yes, I did the LIM gaskets at 92,000.

My 1998 Corvette's shortest was about 5500 miles. In later years they increased the OLM by 33%, so that would be about 8,000 miles now. Maximum OLM possible OCI went from 10,000 to 15,000 miles after GM did a lot of used oil analysis.

This OLM is calibrated for synthetic oil, it is a factory fill.

I have seen the Trans Am go off at 2600 miles after a bunch of hard driving and track time.
The Equinox is at about 3000 miles on the Mobil 1 and the OLM says 38%. I will change it at 4000 miles anyway.
I did the Buicks oil 1000 miles ago, the OLM says it is at 80% right. I will report back when it goes off. I change it every 3000 so dosen't really matter much.
