Just for fun, if you have the GM OLM, what was the shortet interval it recommended and longest and under what conditions. Im wondering if it has every recommended under a 5k miles change. I found an article that says the avg is about 6K miles.
These are 6.0 engines, but will give you an idea of the range of reading you can get. I have heard from people that drive C6 Corvettes hard, like lots of track days, getting under 2k miles from the OLM. I had a year with lots of road trips and the OLM on my C6 Corvette was going for 12k miles. They are calibrated for synthetic so that may explain the 12k.
On my '06 3.5 Malibu Maxx, my shortest was 3000 mi when the OLM was clicking off %'s while driving on the interstate. After having it re-programmed, I've been averaging 4000 mi at 10%.

That is a really broad range. On yours that is not raced, what is your avg?

I only have about 26k on the car but it looks like it would zero out at about 10k. I hit the 1 year limit before I run out of miles. I would go for the miles but have the GM extended service plan and they are pickier than regular new car warranties about service.
Both my 5.3L and 6.0L would hit <10% at about 5500 miles with all stop and go city driving. So I just use 5000 as my OCI on all my vehicles. The GM OLM is the very best system out there so after watching it for almost 10 years with my driving style and weather conditions etc. I guess that is probably accurate for my style in any vehicle.

What are your driving conditions like normally.
When the OLM was dropping fast I was commuting around 10 mi each way to work with an occassional highway ride. I thought the OLM was dropping due to the commute until I was on a 5 hour interstate drive and watched the OLM drop a % every 30 miles. Now the car is my wife's grocery-getter with runs to my kids schools which are around 2 miles from the house. I'm running PP to see if it makes an OLM difference.
In a Silverado 5.3 I had the OLM would flash around 2500 miles at times. Typically during the winter when the truck would be started in the morning, driven a couple miles, started at night and driven back a couple miles. I just cleared it and continued my once a year, springtime, oil changes.
The 6.0 that I am driving right now is at 2% with about 7500 miles on the oil change. It was over 30% until a few weeks ago when the weather got much colder.
i read somewhere that gm makes the oci shorter in the olm so dealers get more service but i don't know if that is true..
On my gm it seems to tell me i need an oil change very often but i think that is because i sometimes drive only 5 minutes here and there... On that one its a lease so i change it when it tells me too if it was mine it would be every 4 months or 4000 miles whatever comes first
Wow actually i am a little suprised at how low some of the numbers are. Due to this, i might knock my wifes blazer down to 6k changes. She only works 7 miles from the house and she warms the truck up every time she goes to work for about 5 mins. It is running PP but just for safety i might even change it at 5K during winter months.
on my 2005 CTS with 3.6L v6 NON-DI
factory fill: Mobil 1 5w30
Longest: 15k miles (95% highway driving)
Usual: 10k-12k miles
Shortest: 8k miles
I can't see the OLM dropping when driving. I can only see the change in % when starting the car. For example, When driving for 600 kms straight, the OLM before driving was at, let say, 88% and when I stopped, before shutting off the engine, still at 88%. When I restarted the car, the OLM shows 86%.
I'm at 2900 miles on the current fill of NAPA synth, and the OLM is reporting 64% left. I had one 500-mile road trip in November. Otherwise it's my usual 80% city driving, with a 10-mile commute each way and a 12-mile highway run to the suburbs several times a month. If I go on the way I have, I think the OLM is indicating I could go 8000 miles before hitting zero.
On my 6-month, 5K changes since I've had the car, the oil life at each change was still at something like 34%.
I've got three GM Cars with an OLM. My 2006 Corvette is pretty consistent at about 8000 miles. My 2009 Malibu with the Ecotec engine has only seen one oil change. I had just under 8,000 miles on that and the OLM was still reading 34% ! My 2007 LuCerne with the Northstar V8 and a monstrous 7.5 quart sump regularly goes out beyond 10,000 miles and still showing 20%. All a combo of 50% hwy, 50% city.
Are most of these calibrated to conventional oil. I know the vette and maybe the other sports cars are probably calibrated to M1 but for most of the daily drivers i think are all conventional calibrated.
