I agree the extreme vs max vs ultra is confusing. I buy 2-3 sets of extreme tires per year from Tirerack - these are all 200 tread wear rating tires used for autocross, hill climbs and time trials. If you aren't competing in any of those events, do yourself a favor and look in the ultra category. The extreme tires wear quickly and typically generate a lot of road noise. Not what one would want in a daily driver.
