I ran Mobil 1 15W50 in upstate NY for 15 years in a Volvo. It started in the coldest weather, although below 5 degrees it needed a bit more effort to start. The car had 230K on it when I got rid of it and ran fine. It was 20 years of rust that got it.
All this here certainly flies in the face of BMW MANDATING Castrol 10W-60 for the M 6 cylinder engines ... otherwise you might get a Poke-Rod (not related to Poke-Mon)

Remember, Alex, according to some owners of those engines, they'll keep Poke-Rodding on you even WITH that 10W60 in there.
My reading of that story is that BMW hid behind a fluids reccomendation rather than copping to an engineering failure on their part, much life Chrysler's back-speccing ATF+4 in certain years of minivan with high transmission failure rates.
