What's the allure of older 4Runners?

The appeal is that Toyota includes a set of "Riding Clothes" with each purchase of a well used 4Runner. Corduroy is long lasting and durable just like a 4Runner.

Because Toyota last a long time and hold their value very well. I haven’t seen any major issues with them at all. I would not get a Trail Blazer at all or a Grand Cherokee they do not hold up well I know someone who has a trailblazer since new it’s lost a lot of value they just don’t hold it like the Toyota does.

I would venture to guess that there are as many Cherokees's with that inline 6 still on the road as there are 4Runners. I know of at least half a dozen that belong to acquaintances that have all tipped well past 300k miles and just beat to death. Still being used daily.

Well we don’t like Chrysler after the engine in our Cherokee went at 108,000 and plus the electrical problems aren’t worth it for me.

I knew a guy that had a cousin who's barber had a customer that was talking to his mailman who had delivered to a warehouse that housed a bounty hunter/skip tracer/ bondsman who had once apprehended a suspect because of issues with a dead battery in his FCA product. Dead battery doesn't count as an electrical problem usually. If you pour enough Lucas Oil Stabilizer into any engine you are asking for an early demise of said vehicle.

The Toyota prices might also be a result of the domestic makers putting out utter rubbish in the last few years. Used to be (90's) that you could get a Ford Expedition or Ranger or Exploder (/s) and they would last through hell and back. Same with some GMC and Dodge trucks. On the SUV and car front, even Honda is dropping hard on reliability. They couldn't put out a decent tranny in their vans for the life of them. Some of the Hondas need new transmissions with every timing belt change. LOL

More than a battery lol the window locks got set because my sister used to roll down all the windows and we never could get it turned off because the wiring messed up. Surprisingly he didn’t put a lot of stabilizer in that one he mostly uses it in his big rig he just put Pennzoil regular 10W-30 in it usually and it went through several radiators in a short period and now it overheats when you turn it off so we have to get a new engine.

My “Old” 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee that I gave to my brother is still running strong, no issues (knocking_wood_emoji) ......Straight 6 with well over 200,000 miles on the clock.
I religiously maintained it before giving it to him, as well does he.
Firm believer of the fact that the longevity of a vehicle is in direct proportion to the service and maintenance it receives!
 
I don't like the direction the domestic competitors went after 2001 or so. Too much complexity, and not enough capability. I do prefer 91-01 Explorers over any year 4Runner though. They are very comfortable, functional, and in my experience reliable. Not to mention safe...yes, I said safe.

My 1994 Explorer was totaled at 257K miles. It was a great truck right through the very sudden end. I was uninjured. Now I have a 1997, SOHC no less. Running great with over 217K on it. Cost me $1000 less than a completely rotted out, unsafe 4Runner that was on Craigslist at the same time. That 4Runner had worse rust than I have seen on any Explorer.

4Runners are good for what they are, but the prices are just dumb for some of them. They have been known for head/head gasket problems with the early V6s, they absolutely do rust, and then there's having to replace the timing belt on many. The whole "everything else is junk HAHA!!!" argument is pretty silly with the number of very old, high mileage Explorers, Blazers, and Grand Cherokees still on the road. I drive a 23 year old high mileage Explorer daily, so I just don't buy that the 4Runner is the only good SUV out there.

There’s a lady around here from Texas with a mint Explorer. Jurassic Park era.

They also probably have the Aisin (Toyota group) transmissions...

Agreed. I bought a 2000 Cherokee Sport in 2012 with 136,000 on it. It never failed me in 4 years after which I sold it with 225,000 on it. Parts were cheap, available and easy to fix or replace. Death wobble was an issue but could be readily fixed. I'm looking for one now as a beach crawler for surfing and fishing 1996-99 are the best years.
 
Men, our priorities are always guns, cars and boats....imho...just look in folks garages, many boats and cars are full of furniture,,lol

Apparently the reason they stopped making the MJ was because since Dodge bought Jeep, they already had a little truck, the Dakota.

Here’s my dads Comanche. Mom and dad bought it new in 1987. They sold it to his parents in 1996 who owned it for 10 years. Dad bought it back around 2006 and had it restored. The bed was hard to find. Came off a low mileage truck that caught on fire.

90k original miles. 4.0 Renix, 5 speed. This is an old pic. It now has leather buckets from a Cherokee as well as a 2” lift / leveling springs in the front.

22R 4 cyl Toy engine.No horsepower to speak of, decent torque.Steel crankshaft, timing chain,early blocks had popup pistons. pretty indestructable. Weber carbs were good for replacing the OEM ones. 80's and early 90's trucks and 4runners.
 
I just recently helped a friend put a new engine in his 4 runner because the head gasket was shot. The kicker is that its a 96 and has 311,000 miles on the clock.

Maybe compared to the sheer scale of Cherokees being pumped out but 190k in 6 years is still a lot of cars. Today thanks to rust and general abuse the comanche is a very rare sight on the road.
