Whats so great about Jeeps?

This one is my daily driver. You can't get to where I am in a car. This is my 5th Jeep. 24 years old and going strong.

Why can't it be both? I hate them and I love mine. The duck thing is stupid. The Jeep Wave is really stupid.

2.5 out of 5 voices in my head hate them, the other 2.5 love them. Even my split personalities have split personalities.
+2

I mentioned earlier once owning a CJ-7..... When it was running right and I wasn't throwing money at it, I loved it. The other times, not so much. It was truly one vehicle that needed a reliable "normal" car to keep around as a backup. I never did fully solve some of the issues with the carb.

I wonder if you can buy a functional used one for less than a new ATV? The wife wants an ATV for the farm but the prices are stupid for ones that haven’t been wrapped around a tree twice. I’ll admit I’ve never looked at Jeep prices before.

One of my all-time favorite vehicles owned was a weary 1993 ZJ - a rarity with the 4.0 and AW4 trans. Bought it cheap and just drove it until it had no AC, no heat, warped head (solved by over-tightening), bent frame (as I said, it was cheap), and needed a new steering box. When the heat failed, there wasn’t much left worth fixing.

I LOVED that car. It just fit well. It rode great. Seats were good. Controls and layout just made sense. Very comfortable to spend time in. Good cargo carrying. 4.0 had torque for days if you felt like doing a thing with it.

I regretted not just dumping money into it later. Missed it a lot. My son mourned when I traded it.

My daily driver. 2002 TJ 4.0 5spd with 4” lift and 33” tires 127k miles. It was un-drivable when we got it 2 years ago due to worn out junk lift parts and improper steering and driveline angles. Replaced everything needed in the garage and had help from a Jeep guru setting it up. Will run at 75 with thumb and index on the wheel with no drama at all. Most fun vehicle I’ve ever owned. 0-60 in a while and rides a touch on the firm side. Our idea of fun is going out with the dogs where other people aren’t and exploring. Fun to drive doesn’t mean 0-60 in 2 seconds and road handling like F1 to everyone. I’ve had other Jeeps but this is the first Wrangler and we love it. Jeep guys don’t do ducks. Mallcrawlers do.

Hope to have a 4 door someday but it won’t be the same.

The new Wranglers are more capable in every way but they’re a different animal.

As I said above, I miss my TJ- and the JLU 4xe is definitely a different animal. That said, it took the place of three vehicles in my garage and it can do most everything my TJ could do- and it still remains a duck-free zone.
Funny thing; my wife drove it to Kroger and when she returned there was a duck on it. Later we went out to dinner and parked next to a new Bronco. I wanted to leave the duck on the Bronco but she wouldn't let me. A fellow Jeeping friend has 3 Wranglers in his family- he drives a Rubicon TJ, his wife has a Rubicon 4xe, and his daughter has a JK. He refuses to wave at Wranglers with either a dash full of ducks or an "angry" grille. I plan to sneak over to his house and leave it one of his.

In my experience, nothing 🤷‍♂️
For the Overland/Moab crowd, it's a Jeep thing I'll never understand
I care even less for the lower quality JK/JL Wrangler
I hated the KJ Liberty, and I loathed the PM/MK pseudo Jeep Patriot I had to drive for work 🤮
Some of the old ones look kinda cool, and they were a noble part of the war effort

Even the young kids these days aren't falling for the hype

Sounds like me. I want to ask the owner what his Jeep is mad about, mine makes me smile when I drive it. The duck thing is today’s equivalent of the baby-on-board signs IMO. Suburban female thing.

@MCompact how has the 4XE been? How many miles and any problems?

We have a third generation (1999-2002) 4Runner and many owners are former Jeep owners. That may be bigger and heavier than you want. ATV’s seem to be around 2,000 lbs so easier to pull out.

My JLU will be 5 in June - 0 issues - DD, and it’s done hundreds of miles in 4WD … The JL’s are better driving vehicles than some here imagine if they were only around the older models … Come pretty well loaded if you like …

Mine will be 7 in June - same - drives great on road and is very comfortable for road trips. I can't think of another vehicle that would drive 1500 miles to Moab and then do the trails with as much ease and confidence. Smooth ride and excellent seats and quiet make an excellent road trip vehicle. Before I had a Wrangler, I thought my other Jeeps and Land Rovers were capable - they are, but not Wrangler capable. So much easier to wheel a wrangler than anything else.

When I was looking for a used Wrangler 4xe their vehicle histories fell into one of three categories: lemon buybacks, Wranglers that saw the dealer every 2,000 miles or less and Wranglers that only visited the dealer for scheduled maintenance. I bought an off-lease Wrangler 4xe from the third category. An added bonus was that the dealer that sold/serviced it was part of the same dealer group that sold/serviced my Mazdaspeed3- people that I trusted. The sole warranty repair shown was a steering damper at 19.5k miles. Now at 35.7k miles I've had no issues aside from two recalls, both of which were performed by my excellent local dealer.

Dumb question from a guy who never owned a Jeep: Is the electronics in modern Jeeps water resistant enough to be caught in the rain with the top off?

The electronics below the 30" fording depth are designed to be submerged; as for the interior I would not want to subject it to a heavy downpour- but a light rain shower would likely be okay. Buy a TJ if you want to leave the top down/off rain or shine.
