In 02 I bought my Mom a 99 Kia Sportage. 2wd,4door,auto trans. IIRC it had 35K on it.

In 09 or 2010 an uninsured motorist made an illegal left turn and mom T-Boned him @ 50mph. Odd as it sounds the Sportage has a fully boxed frame! It blew right through the guys Lumina!

The air bags did not go off in the Kia. It got a grill,bumper,1-fender hood paint match and a slight frame pull. It did not even break the Radiator or AC condenser. As I stated it absolutly blew through the Lumina!!!

But due to the frame pull the car was declared a total. But we bought it back and Fixed it with used Kia parts from PicAPart. I was there to see the frame pull and the frame was straightened better than new.

Ive maintained the car as good or better than any BITOG member. This includes draining and refilling the trans at every oil change by removing the trans drain plug. This equals 2 qts drained and refilled.

Car runs fine. AC cold,heat hot,tracks straight,new timing belt,WP etc @ 72K due to age. Windows go up and down,radio works etc.

Passes the Ca smog test, no CEL on. Fresh coolant, new windshield,battery,diff oil.

Car now has 79,300 miles on it. Mom no longer drives and the car isnt used much. We can do w/o it. So its time to sell it.

But due to it having a Salvage title it has lost value I'm sure. But how much ? Whats it worth?

sounds more like a 25mph impact at 50 that car should have been demolished. If it has a salvage title keep the car its probably only worth 500
register it in a state that gives good titles.

You will only know if you put it for sale locally and see how many replies you get. Start high and reduce it. Im not sure many would consider a salvage title unless price is low...and Kia resale already not amazing but like i said post it at a higher price and see if anyone bites.

$3k? Tough to tell without seeing it, but if it's pretty clean I think $3k would be fair. I'd advertise it at $3.5k and see what kind of activity you get.

mom was doing 50 in a 50 zone and never had a chance to hit the brakes. I find it hard to believe myself but there were witnesses other than my mom. It t-boned the lumina and blew it into the ditch! Caved the dr side in past the seat.

Why not look it up on Nadaguide or kbb? You'd be closer toward the rough and average trade in as opposed to clean or retail price. Rough is about $700 and average is $1100. In general, any car that runs is typically worth 1k or so. You don't mention which options it has which would make it worth more, leather, alloys, cruise control.

Why being salvaged devalues the car as much as you think?

My accord was declared total 2 times , Except for air bags not working and a little bit rust everything is works fine, its worth atlease 2.5k with 110k on it.


You need to find a person who understand its a good car, its been taken care of, and paper and whatever does not matter.

less than 100k and you did timing belt? Someone will definetley will appreciate that.

A running car has intrinsic value. If the car is pleasing aesthetically and runs well, it has more value. If it has air conditioning, is reliable and gets fairly good gas mileage, that adds more value as well - value that can never go away. Age, brand, title considerations are secondary, and do have an effect, but there are folks out there who see the bigger picture. The car is likely worth $1200-1500 if it's as good as you say.

Had it hit a GM J car or N car,the door would have been pushed over to the other door.GM cars of that era had horrible side crash protection,as did their minivans (RWD and FWD) in frontal crashes.20/20,Dateline all proved that.

Can you park it at your work with a "for sale" sign? Buyers might be interested in "mechanic maintained".

Someone who wants 4wd for offroading won't care about the salvage title, but yours is 2wd, so you've got the "I want a cute ute for buffy to drive to high school" crowd.

If the AC works it's probably worth $1500 or so. I wouldn't get hung up on the salvage title devaluing it. There are a few weird people in every town who would jump at anything with under 100k on it, despite the brand or maintenance or lack thereof.

Something that runs well with AC and reasonable miles has got some value, plus its been maintained by a mechanic and driven by a little old lady on sundays...
Do an ad with lots of pictures and the full story, without mentioning the speed of the accident and see what happens. Start at $2500 and see what kind of interest there is for it. $1200-1500 will have it gone fast though if that's the goal.

I'd say a solid $1500 minimum. Once you get into this low of a price range, salvage titles mean less - what matters is how it runs and you have a pretty good idea of the repairs done, so if you come across as trustworthy to a buyer, the title issue means less.
I'd start off in the $2200-2400 range and not settle for less than $1500.

Pretty much any car that runs and is road legal is worth $1k.

In ca the seller is responsible for it passing smog before being sold. It passed! HC was 9 ppm.
