well, i have been using regular old mobil 10w30 in all my vehicles for quite some time, but its getting so hard to find that im going to switch, autozone even quit selling it now and replaced it with some new 2.50 per quart mobil, so im looking for another good non-synthetic oil to use in all my vehicles that i can actually find..lol..i used to use castrol and havoline in some of my vehicles i owned in the past and both seemed to tar and sludge up quickly, ive also used exxon superflo and Pennzoil and regular shell 10w30 and liked them, but i read somewhere about the teflon in the Pennzoil gumming up or something or other, is this true because i would like to either go back to pennzoil or the superflo, really the pennzoil because its readily available everywhere, but i do NOT want a sludge problem, all my engines are clean..lol.anyone tell me the truth about regular old pennzoil? i change oil and filters at 3,000 mile intervals, bottom line is i need an oil that will do its job but NOT sludge up.. your thoughts

If Havoline and Castrol are sludging your engines on 3000 OCIs, then you have bigger problems than deciding what oil to use. The used oil analysis section of this board is littered with excellent analyses of these oils and they are generally well-regarded.

Pennzoil and Superflow are readily available. Pennzoil doesn't have any teflon in it.

While I have to agree, if you're getting sludge from Castrol or Havoline you have a major problem, I will answer your question about Pennzoil.

People will tell you that Pennzoil, Quaker State, and other PA oils are made from Parafin based crude. They will tell you that this parafin wax builds up in your engine as sludge. They will tell you that you are better off with a southern asphalt based crude. This is false. This was never true.

On top of everything else, oil manufactured in PA is refined from mostly non-american crude. The oils in question (Pennzoil, Kendall, QS, and others) are now mostly based in Texas and no longer have any ties to PA at all.

Now, the fun part. Many oils that these mis-informed people (who warn against use of Pennzoil, etc...) suggest are contracted to refineries thoughout the US, including PA.

Also, to my knowledge, Pennzoil has never contained teflon.

Put on a pot of coffee and do some reading.

I don't think you can go wrong with any of the name brand latest formulation GF-4/SM labelled oils for moderate drains.

That said, some of the current readily available oils with excellent reputations here include Castrol GTX, Pennzoil, Chevron Supreme and Texaco Havoline. There are others as well.

Another interesting option for 10w30 oils is to find one of the fleet/HDEO/"diesel" oils such as Chevron Delo which is available as a 10w30. These oils are more often sold in the 15w40 weight, which might be too thick for your purposes. Many people are confused and think that a diesel rated oil is incompatible with gasoline engine cars. Nothing could be further from the truth.

The old wives tale about Pennzoil making sludge happen is variously reported to either have once upon a time had a pinch of truth or to have never been true. In any case, the modern versions have no such problems for sure.

Havoline, Chevron Supreme, Motorcraft and Pennzoil are good examples of today's better 'hydrocracked' conventional oils. All are top quality, will not sludge a motor if changed at reasonable intervals and don't contain teflon. As you are a new member, I would highly recommend you read some of the articles at the home page on motor oil basics. You will be amazed at all the info you will learn and you will soon begin to see how much bad info and 'wive's tales' there is out there on motor oil.

oh man, thanks guys!! now that i know the truth, i can go back to my pennzoil, it is available everywhere and i always liked it personally, just listened to the myths..i have read a little on this site about this chevron oil, is it even better than pennzoil?

CONOCO. It is also rumored that CONOCO does not import oil from the Middle East but I can't say for sure. So if politics drive some of your purchases, there you go.

Motorcraft oil in Canada will be made by Esso Canada very soon which is Exxon in Canadian version. Exxon XD3 HDEO non syn oil, I believe XD3 Elite in the States is an excellent oil for clean engines, my Nissan service manager recommends it for any sludge problems and it is great add pack. I use XD3 dino now to breakin my new Nissan, then XD3 syn, too bad XD3 doesn't market this syn in the States. I asked an Esso tech up here why not market the XD3 syn in States and he didn't know, good oil.

Chevron & Pennzoil are both highly regarded in this forum. Either one will work just fine. Also, since nobody else mentioned it, why not try the new Mobil Clean 5000. Mobil guarantees it's performance for 5000 miles & it should be less than $2/qt. just about anywhere you find it.

For 3,000 mile OCI's any conventional will be fine and the engine will outlast the rest of the car. You can buy strictly on price as long as you adhere strictly to the OCI.

Chevron isn't better than Pennzoil, but you will generally find it cheaper. Havoline and Chevron are essentially the same. You will likely find Havoline more readily where you live.

Johnny is the Pennzoil guru on this site. It is a great conventional oil.

Castrol and Havoline are good stuff, so if they seemed to sludge, then you have other problems.

Regular Mobil Drive Clean has been discontinued. Mobil Clean 5000 is the product now. It will cost a bit more, but has better basestock.

I just finished a 9-month gig with ConocoPhillips and can tell you that they do have oil operations in Libia. However, I believe that that is the only area in the Middle East where they do business; the rest is in the North Sea, Russia (Lukoil), Africa, Latin America, Asia, and the US.
