What tool is used to pop this spring clamp?

Right. The tension is pulling the tabs against each other rather than away. If you look at the second photo of No2 you'll see an indent which prevent the "open hole" tab from moving further away from the other.
you cant push that down there would be a hose inside preventing any such action.
its simply a bad photo?

Maybe
@Trav knows?

Type 2 are ones that lock open for easier installation. There is a barb that will hold it in the position shown-- they come from the factory that way. no photoshop tricks. Yes when it is locked open you would place it on the connection then use a screwdriver in the hole in the big tab to push the small tab toward the hose and release it. It will then snap in place. To remove, use pliers the same as other clamps. If you push hard on the pliers it will lock open again.

Thanks! I was just having an epiphany and going to say is that some sort of lock in the "open" position.

Never seen that style before.. learn something new today :D.
The hold open tab is not vis in the pic eh.

When I had my GTI, I was doing something in the engine bay that required removing coolant hoses (thermostat I think) and I believe it used those type clamps. I didn't have or know what the correct tool was for the job and was trying my best with the only pliers I had. I said words that I didn't think I would ever say out loud before that job was done.

This is correct. Hold it in position with needlenose pliers then use a snap on nose picker to release it. Don't get ya finga caught!

You can see the little tab holding the clamp open in this picture, it's a regular spring clamp

I've found the pliers that you can lock into position to be the most useful on tight jobs.

I’ll use this thread to report on two type of 24” flexible hose clamp pliers. The design on the left is the better of the two. It can squeeze a set of clamp tabs separated by as much as 3-1/2 “ down to 1/2 inch. The one one the right can only squeeze from 2-1/4 down to 1-1/2 inches. As someone said, the identical items come in many brands.

I’ve had these from Astro Pneumatic for 7 years. Zero complaints and never let me down. For easy to reach places, the plier style works too. I have a set from GearWrench. Keeps wear off the cable style too.
