What to do with cherry pie filling other than pie?

Found some at Dollar Tree for their basic $1.25 price. Bought a couple of cans since I like the taste of sour cherry and figured I might have a use for it. My kid was there and suggested maybe it could be used in plain yogurt. I opened a can and just sampled it. Not that sweet. The ingredient list says HFCS then regular (glucose I assume) corn syrup. Most cherry pies I’ve had are much sweeter, so I assume that I can add sugar if making pies.

I’ve seen fresh sour cherries sold, but they’re typically more than $10/lb. I’ve read articles on the quest to find fresh sour cherries in Southern California farmers markets, since Michigan pretty much corners the market in them. The canned cherries I have are Mother’s Maid brand from Burnette Foods in MI.

My mother made a multi-layered desert that never lasted long.

The base was a vanilla cake about 2 to 3 inches thick. Then a layer of cherries or blueberries from a can. The kind that has a marmalade type gell that the same flavor as the cherries or blueberries, then a inch or two layer of Jello instant vanilla pudding, some more of the same fruit, and then a couple inches of Cool Whip.


The blueberry was the best, but the cherry versions if it also disapeared quickly.

When she made that, it was always all gone by sunset.

Thought of something. I miss the McDonald's fried cherry pie. Any recipes for recreating it? Wouldn’t even have to look perfect. I guess the one missing ingredient might be beef tallow. It that it couldn’t be used.

Mom sometimes made that desert in a big trifle bowl. But more often made it in a deep rectangle cake pan that held more. And usually made it when we had guest.

She made a great chicken soup using a cooked chicken that was then broken apart and the bones and skin and neck were also put into the big pot to simmer with chopped up celery, bolyon cubes, and straight and spiral noodles, left to simmer on low for a very long time. That also never lasted until sundown. With 9 people in the house, the ones that got home late would complain about it being all gone before they got home.

Her meatloaf that included special spices was also a big hit.
 
as @AZjeff mentioned you could do hot pocket pies. The other option would be a cherry cobbler, or even cherry cheesecake. My MIL makes them in little tart shells with the gram cracker, cream cheese and cherry pie filling.
