I have a problem. My wife drives an 03 escort ZX2, which requires 5w-20 for the warrenty period. So being a good BITOG member when oil was on sale at Advance Auto, I'd pick up a case. Now with the tranny going bad again (2 automatics in 17k!!!!!) I'am getting rid of it. (Buying another Passat. I have lots of GC!!!) So now I have 1 case of GTX 5w-20 and 1 of Havoline 5w-20. So can I use this oil in either a 99 Grand-am 3100, or a 97 deville with a northstar. Also does anyone need 4 supertech filters for a 2.0l ford? Thanks in advance!

What does the manual say?

I normally wouldn't use it on those older engines, but the new 5w-20 oil do have the protection of a 30wt. I would give it a try on the Grand-am, and see what happens.

No, dont put it in the Pontiac as a straight 20 wt.. It probably also has piston slap which will get worse with the 20 wt.. You could maybe mix a quart or two with a 30wt or even a 40 wt oil.

Have you ever done an oil analysis on the Pontiac?
Are you aware of the intake gasket leak problem on this vehicle?

The Grand-am belongs to a guy I work with,109k. That I service. When he took it in for a recall last month, they said they should change them.($600) I will send this OCI to blackstone. The Deville belongs to my grandmother, maybe 500 miles every 6 months. But if I would mix it 50/50 with a 10w-30. Then would it be ok for both?

I would not use 5w20 on those to vehicles, although it will probably not hurt anything. Give it a try in the GA if anything, perhaps mixed with 5w30, it will do just fine on that oil.

Put that oil in the trunk as a gift to the new owner

Another blending suggestion. Get some 10w40 of the respective brands. GTX tends to be thicker so use that mix in the summer, and use the Halvoline mix in the winter. 4 qts 5w20 to 1 qt 10w40. Use of the 10w40 will help preserve some of the extreme cold flow properties.

I make 10-30 with 1/2 Chevron supreme 5-20 and
1/2 15-40 Delo. You could use Delo with the Havoline. I use it in a 3.1 GM Olds cutlass supreme.

WM takes the stuff back as another way to exchange what you no longer have the car for.

GM could use it if they coud stop all the dang piston slap. Thinner oils seem to make an exhisting case of piston slap more noticable. If the 3100 has it, (which most do) I personally would do a blend like affore mentioned or just not use it at all. You have what, maybe $10 worth of oil. I'd just save it for lawnmowers and such or when you own another vehicle that requires it.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I used the web page listed above, and the oil chart data. To come up with mix ratios using same brand 20/50. Also I'll list the data from blackstone on the G.A.,should be interesting. You can see the gaskets leaking down the heads. He's very cheap and doesn't beleive they need changed, without hard data.
