Total is a 100 year old company that was merged with Elf. Nobody was worried about the quality when Elf and Total signs were on every racetrack outside of the US and Formula 1 cars were running on it.

The only thing questionable and dubious is the Scam Detector's algorithm.
It's a website validator, not a company validator
I guess it is just that it is not known much in the US. In Europe I would argue they are far better known with their gas stations than with their engine oils.
The same goes for Shell, though. Yes they have great oil (Pennzoil in the US), but they are far better known for their gas.
I recognized the brand right away, but wasn't aware of the brand name change. Total Quartz is well known oil for at least the last 25 years.
