What the heck is 0w12?

I guess it is just that it is not known much in the US. In Europe I would argue they are far better known with their gas stations than with their engine oils.

The same goes for Shell, though. Yes they have great oil (Pennzoil in the US), but they are far better known for their gas.
Shell oils in Europe are like Mobil 1 in the US. Every gas station, big stores has it.
 
I've not ever used anything lower than 5W-20, and it's pretty thin. A guy I know used I believe a 0W-8 recently and told me it was like pouring water out of a jug. How stuff like that clings to internal parts after sitting even just a few hours I don't know.

Toyota Camry, Corolla, Crown, and several others use 0w-8 for the last couple years. So there there are a few million cars out there running it. That being said, I'll be using 0w-20.
