Most people will agree that synthetic oils do a pretty good job for an extended OCI.

Post stories or your opinions on some syns you have tried that you personally would not go back to again, or don't really care for!

Castrol Edge US version.

Look at their PDS for this oil and instead of relevant information so you can compare it other oils they just use "OK".
If its that good why hide the info?

My long experience with M1 has been long OCIs have done a very good job. Back in the mid 70s I tried Amsoil 10-40 for a year with no problems. After M1 became available I went with that.

I had one odd experience with PP (it came out very watery one OCI) I have used it before with good results and i dont think badly of this oil, but after that one "watery" experience ive been running Mobil 1 most of the time now, i wont say that i wouldnt use it again, maybee i will. Im just not in a hurry to see if i can duplicate the experience.

I'm sure that's not the full list of every synthetic oil I've used since ~1990, but it's a good sample.
Incidentally, for those who would scoff, the Slick 50 syn was a Grp IV oil, and had nothing in common with the oil additive they then offered.

Really?
I've always found that a few runs of PP leave the engine really clean.
I never saw any orange sheen, which I take to be varnish.

I have run many different synthetics over the years and only had a problem with one. It was Amsoil 20w50 motorcycle oil. I was running it my harley back in 2005 and after the bike got warmed up riding up in the mountains it began to run bad and got real hot. I wasn't sure I was even going to make it home. I let the bike cool down and rode home. Dumped the oil and it came out just like water. I refilled with Redline 20w60 and never had another problem with the bike. I never did figure it out. Might have just been a bad batch or something.

I used Mobil 1 exclusively with Mobil 1 filters exclusively for 4 years on my Cherokee. Kept the engine literally spotless!

But when I bought my Mazda 3 I changed out the oil to Mobil 1 based on past experience. Ran it 3k miles and dumped it. I simply did not like the noise level of the Mobil 1 in this particular engine. Most other oils used since then have kept the engine much quieter.

So for my Mazda application I do not like Mobil 1.

In the GC 4.0, M1 made more than twice the iron of any other oil that was run, so for this engine I don't like it.

Valvoline Synpower didn't do well in the 4.0 either.

Pennzoil Ultra turned into a waxy substance and almost killed my 3.0 Mitsu V6 so thats the one oil I would not go back to ever.
5w30

Mobil-1 let me count the ways:

I hear more valvetrain noise with it

UOAs show higher iron levels with M-1 than any other brand (and the company will not provide a logical explanation as to why this happens)

When Hurricane Katrina hit, apparently Valvoline discovered M-1 apparently wasn't even meeting SM wear specs because of the hurricane shortage of an ingredient. That is about when the ads started saying Valvoline delivers 4 times more protection against wear than M-1. It looks like for a time there, M-1 wasn't really M-1.

One of these factors alone doesn't really mean much, but after you start putting them together, you begin (or should begin) to wonder why no other manufacturer has these issues

+1....same here....but I've only used three:

Valvoline, Mobil 1 , and currently Pennzoil Platinum....all in 5w20.

Current stash: M-1 0w20, PP 5w20, and QSUD 5w20.

I've only used 3: Castrol Syntec, Valvoline Durablend, and Pennzoil syn-blend. All in 10w-30 and in the same 1978 Ford LTD. It knocked badly on first start with the PZ, but never did it again with any of the other oils used in it. I never used it again, so I can't really blame the oil. Most likely a filter issue back then.
