Does anyone know what type of sensor is generally used for automotive electrical temperature sensors? I don't want to spend $15+ for a remote temp sensor. I know they have to have a specific range of resistance.

Is it the industrial "K" type? I think K is the oldest and most common sensor for industrial applications.

No, it is not the industrial K type. These are somewhat specialised and use their own connectors.

Automotive temp sensors are thermistors (variable resistance) and not thermocouples (voltage generators)

right.

But what is your intent? The values will be different for different sensors. You have to know exactly what you want.
