What Sealant to use for Differential?

Never had a problem before. However, I bought this stuff Friday http://www.permatex.com/products-2/produ...-sealant-detail

It's garbage. Not only did I run my differential dry, but I now have a puddle of oil under my Jeep in the drive way.

It says it is safe for oils. It doesn't cure. I had a bit on my gloves that I wiped off on the cleaned diff cover. 24 hours later, this stuff has not yet cured.

What can I buy for this?

Hopefully I won't need to use that extra differential I have.

If you have a Mopar dealer in close range, visit the parts guys and ask for axle cover sealant (more affectionately called 'axle snot'). Orange in color, seals like a champ. I don't recall what it costs exactly, but I want to say it's under $10.

I forget who makes it or what its over-the-counter formulation is, but that stuff is magical.

I changed the fluid in my 09 f150 rear diff on Friday. Used this:
RTV gasket

I let it set for an hour after reinstalling the cover before adding the fluid and friction modifier. Sealed perfectly.

That #2 non hardening stuff is mainly a gasket dressing.

Permatex makes a specific gear oil RTV gasket maker (similar to the traditional red, blue, black and grey RTV tubes. I would check it out. I bet it has more "body" to it than the stuff that failed you.

Maybe similar to the Mopar sealant mentioned, I have also had great success with Toyota FIPG (form in place gasket) - both red and black. I read somewhere it isn't RTV but something else... urethane perhaps (?) Whatever it is, it works. Like all of these sealants discussed, prep and application technique are critical. I like a 24hr cure period before putting in service. Might be overkill.

You're entirely at fault here for using the incorrect product.

Permatex makes a RTV specifically for this application: http://www.permatex.com/products-2/produ...et-maker-detail

I think Permatex is at fault for mislabeling this product. No where does it say it's a not sealing product. If it said anywhere that it was a gasket dressing and NOT a gasket maker (which it says on the label), I wouldn't have bought it.

I have used RTV before with success. Autozone doesn't sell it any more - all they had was this stuff, which is labeled as a gasket maker not dressing.

If you're going to grab something off the shelf without fully understanding what it is, and subsequently surmise suitability, then you should abstain from using them altogether.

Buy a good conventional gasket. AutoZone does carry those.

Well I'll check for the actual RTV when I go to Napa to buy brake hardware this week. I have always bought RTV in the past without issue because it was available haha.

I think we have already determined the wrong product was purchased.

Enough with the personal attacks. You can stop posting now. You are contributing nothing to this topic.

I understand you really get enjoyment out of harassing members on mistakes. That's cool. Go troll somewhere else.

Hey Miller88,

Chock it up to experience. No harm, no foul....except maybe some $$ and time spent. Anyone who does DIY repairs learns from experience. Anyone claiming no mistakes is lying.

I've kept Form-A-Gasket #2 in my cabinet for many years as a catch-all product for emergency repairs of suitable nature.

It looks like Permatex has improved their on-line product selector. The Form-A-Gasket #2 does show up more as a gasket dressing than a gasket maker. I'm not sure if that was always the case. It's name is somewhat misleading.

Have a cool one and blow it off. Life is too short.

Take care.

This was certainly an ... interesting product. Someone Jiffy lube'd 2 of the bolts in that hold the cover on. Pulled the threads on one and snapped the head off another trying to remove it. oddly enough - these aren't leaking (had to retap and use a different bolt).

I do have a real diff cover. 16 years and a few submersions later, the diff surface is a bit pitted. This would be the stuff to use on the actual gasket.

85w-140 is cheap. The right product is cheap. Probably did the differential good to be "flushed". I usually just suck it out through the fill hole and figured it would be a good idea to take some brake cleaner to the differential to clean some of the crud out that tends to build up.

I used Permatex RTV AND a Felpro diff cover gasket on my grandpa's 96' Cherokee last year, front and rear. No leaks at all.
